Solution

To resolve this problem, use the following methods in the order that they are presented.
Remove the Bluetooth Authentication Agent
- Click Start
- Point to Settings
- Click Control Panel
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs
- On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Bluetooth Authentication Agent
- Click Add/Remove.
- Restart the computer
- Delete the BluetoothAuthenticationAgent entry from the Windows registry
- Click Start
- Click Run and type in the Open box
- Click OK
- Locate and then click the following registry key
- In the right pane, right-click BluetoothAuthenticationAgent
- Click Delete
- Click Close to close Registry Editor
- Restart the computer

"Error Loading Operating System" Error Message When You Restart Your Computer During Setup

Error Message

When you restart your computer after the file-copy portion of Windows XP Setup, you may receive the following error message:

- This article contains steps that may involve changing your BIOS or complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings or that may require you to make physical changes to your computer hardware.
- If you need help with any of these steps, contact your hardware manufacturer and note that making either hardware or BIOS changes to your computer may invalidate your warranty.
  - Upgrade BIOS to the latest revision for your computer.
    - Contact the computer manufacturer to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest BIOS update that is available for the computer.

You Receive An "Explorer.Exe Has Generated Errors And Will Be Closed By Windows" Error Message

Error Message

After you upgrade to Windows XP from an earlier Windows operating system, you may receive the following error message when you first log on, and then the Windows Error Reporting utility runs and creates a log file:
When you receive this error message, either no desktop appears or the desktop is blank.
Task Manager indicates that Explorer.exe is using close to 100 percent of the available resources.

Cause

This issue may occur if the Norton CleanSweep program was installed in the previous operating system.

Solution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.
- Method 1
  - After you start the computer and receive the error message, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE
  - Click Task Manager
  - In Task Manager
  - Click New Task
  - Type
  - Press Enter to start Control Panel
  - Double-click Add/Remove Programs
  - In the list of currently installed programs, click CleanSweep
  - Click Change/Remove
  - Remove CleanSweep
  - Restart the computer
- Method 2
  - Restart the computer.
  - When you see the Boot menu, press the F8 key for options to start in Safe mode
  - Select the Safe Mode Command Prompt option
  - After you log on, type
  - Press Enter to start the Add/Remove Programs Wizard
  - In the list of currently installed programs, click CleanSweep
  - Click Change/Remove.
  - Remove the CleanSweep program
  - Restart the computer
- Method 3
  - Restart the computer.
  - When you see the Boot menu
  - Press the F8 key for options to start in Safe mode
  - Select the Safe Mode Command Prompt option
  - Change to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder
  - Typically, this is the C:\WINNT\System32 folder
  - Rename the Apitrap.dll file to Apitrap.old
  - Restart the computer.

"Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Error Message

When you start your Windows XP-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
- Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
You may not be able to open folders, such as the My Documents folder or the My Computer folder.

Cause

This problem may be caused by Qcbar.dll, a program that adds adult Web site links to the Internet Explorer Favorites menu.

Solution

Method 1: Remove the Link from Your Favorites Folder in Internet Explorer
- Start Internet Explorer
- Open Favorites
- Click Uninstall on the Adult Links menu
Method 2: Manually Delete the Qcbar Program Files
- Click Start
- Click Run
- In the Open box type in or copy and paste
- Click OK
- Delete each of the following registry entries.
- To do this, right-click each registry entry below, click Delete, and then click Yes
- Shut down, and then restart your computer.
- Manually delete the Qcbar program files.
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - Type the following in the Open box.
  - Switch to the C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\
    Start Menu\Programs\Accessories folder, and then type the following commands:
  - Press the Enter Key
  - In the Internet Explorer Favorites folder, delete the Adult Links folder, delete the AdultSearch folder, and then delete the Sports folder.
  - Delete the Adult Links Daily shortcut from the Desktop menu and from the Start menu.

Setup Stops When Inspecting Computer Hardware Configuration

Error Message

Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration.

Solution

The system BIOS may display that it recognizes a bootable CD-ROM during POST. There are usually CMOS options that allow you to select which boot devices to try and in what order. We recommend disabling the option to boot from the CD-ROM drive in the CMOS settings.
Microsoft recommends that you not leave the Windows NT CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive until after the computer configuration detection is finished. Or, contact the manufacturer of your computer or system BIOS for an updated BIOS to correct the problem.
Note: That this is only one cause of the problem. Other causes include IRQ conflicts, an incorrect HAL, external caching, and shadowing options in the CMOS settings.

"STOP 0x0000001E" Error Message During Windows Setup

Error Message

When you run Windows XP Setup, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Cause

This behavior can occur if you restart your computer during or after the Windows Setup process, and if any of the following conditions are true:
- There is insufficient disk space on the drive on which you installed Windows.
- There is an outdated or incompatible third-party driver (or drivers) installed on your computer -- for example a faulty video driver.
- There are system BIOS incompatibilities.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods as appropriate to your situation.
- Method 1: Free Up Disk Space
  - Make sure that the disk on which you installed Windows has sufficient free disk space, or reinstall Windows to a disk with sufficient free space.
- Method 2: Disable or Remove the Third-Party Driver
  - If the STOP 0x1E error message lists a driver by name, disable or remove that driver. If this resolves the issue, contact the hardware manufacturer for more information about how to obtain the latest version of the driver.
- Method 3: Upgrade Your System BIOS
  - For information about how to upgrade your system BIOS, contact the manufacturer of your computer or the manufacturer of your computer's motherboard.
  - You can also use the Microsoft Debugging Tools to obtain more information about this error message.
- More Information
  - The STOP 0x1E error message (also known as a bug check code) indicates that the Windows XP kernel detected an illegal or unknown processor instruction. The exception address usually identifies the driver or faulty hardware that caused the issue. Make a note of this address and the link date of the driver or image that contains this address. You will need to provide this information to assist Microsoft Support Engineers in troubleshooting this issue if it becomes necessary to contact Microsoft.
  - The parameters in this error message are as follows:
    - [1] is the exception code that was not handled.
    - [2] is the address of the module in which the exception occurred.
    - [3] represents parameter 0 of the exception.
    - [4] represents parameter 1 of the exception.

A Stop: 0xc000026C or Stop: 0xc0000221 "Unable to Load Device Driver" Error Occurs When You Start Windows XP

Error Message

STOP: 0xc000026C [Unable to load device driver] DriverName

-or-

STOP: 0xc0000221 [Unable to load device driver] DriverName

-or-

STOP: 0xc0000221. Bad image check sum, the image user32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header check sum does not match the computed check sum.
DriverName is the name of the device driver file.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, use the appropriate method for your symptoms.
Missing or Damaged Driver File
- Use Recovery Console to replace the missing or damaged driver file. To do so, follow these steps:
  - Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. Select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  - When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start Recovery Console.
  - If your computer is configured for dual booting or multiple booting, select the relevant Windows XP installation.
  - When you are prompted to do so, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.
    - NOTE: In Windows XP Home Edition, the administrator password is\ blank by default.
  - At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
  - To rename the damaged driver file, type the following command, and then press ENTER
  - To copy the driver from the Windows XP CD-ROM to the Drivers folder, type the following command, and then press ENTER
  - Type exit, press ENTER, and then restart the computer.
Missing or Damaged User32.dll File
- Use Recovery Console to replace the corrupted or damaged User32.dll file, then, if needed, perform an in-place upgrade (also called a repair install) of Windows XP. To do so follow these steps:
  - Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. Select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
  - When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start Recovery Console.
  - If your computer is configured for dual booting or multiple booting, select the relevant Windows XP installation.
  - When you are prompted to do so, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.
    - NOTE: In Windows XP Home Edition, the administrator password is\ blank by default.
  - At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
  - To rename the User32.dll file, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
  - To expand a new copy of the User32.dll file from the Windows XP CD-ROM to the System32 folder, type the following command, and then press ENTER
  - Type exit, press ENTER, and then restart the computer
. If Windows XP still fails to start, you may need to perform an in-place upgrade (also called a repair install)

"STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" Error Message During Windows XP Upgrade

STOP 0x000000ED (0xaaaaaaaa,0xbbbbbbbb,0xcccccccc,0xdddddddd) UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

NOTE If you receive this error message when you restart the computer for the first time during an upgrade to Windows XP, your original operating system still works correctly. In some cases, a message appears on the BIOS report screen that states that the wrong cable is in use, but you may not see this message on computers that have a fast startup time.

Cause

This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions is true:
- Your computer uses an Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) hard disk controller, and the following conditions are true:
  - You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.
  - The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.
- The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.

Resolution

UDMA Controller
- If your computer uses a UDMA hard disk controller, use the following procedures:
  - Replace the 40-wire cable with an 80-wire UDMA cable.
  - In the BIOS settings for your computer, load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings, and then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB Support.
Damaged File System
- If the second parameter (0xbbbbbbbb) of the Stop error is 0xC0000032, then the file system is damaged.
- If this is the case, restart the computer to the Recovery Console, and then use the chkdsk /r command to repair the volume. After you repair the volume, check your hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage.
- To do this, use the following steps:
  - Start your computer with the Windows startup disks, or with the Windows CD-ROM if your computer can start from the CD-ROM drive.
  - When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option.
  - If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  - Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do so.
    - NOTE: If no administrator password exists, press ENTER.
  - At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
  - At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer.
  - If this procedure does not work, repeat it and use the fixboot command instead of the chkdsk /r command.

Msconfig is Missing in Windows XP

Extract a New Copy of Msconfig.exe
Open a command prompt window
Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the following command:

Method 1
- Right clicked the desktop, a dropdown menu will appear
- Clicked "Arrange Icons By..."
- Clicked on "Show Desktop Icons"
Method 2
- Right click anywhere on the desktop
- A dropdown menu will appear
- Click Properties
- Click Desktop/Customize Desktop/Web tab
- Deselect any web-content, images or other selected items
- Remove "tick" from "lock desktop items"
Method 3
- Do a search for shdocvw.dll
- Right click on the file name and rename it
- Reboot and see if this helps
Method 4
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type in
- Click OK
- The registry editor will open
- Find the following key

Auto login for Win XP

Method 1
- You can configure Windows XP to automate the logon process if your computer is not part of a domain
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - Type
  - Click OK
  - In the Windows that open clear the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer check box
  - Click Apply
  - Enter the user name and password you wish to automatically log on with
  - Click OK
  - Click OK again
Method 2
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type in
- Click OK.
- Locate the following registry key:
- Using your account name and password, double-click the DefaultUserName entry
- Type your user name
- Click OK
- Double-click the DefaultPassword entry
- Type your password under the value data box
- Click OK
- If there is no DefaultPassword value
- Create the value.
  - Click Edit
  - Click New
  - Click String Value
  - Type DefaultPassword as the value name
  - Press Enter
  - Double-click the newly created key
  - Type your password in the Value Data box
  - If no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows XP automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon registry key from 1 (true) to 0 (false) to turn off the AutoAdminLogon feature
- Double-click the AutoAdminLogon entry, type 1 in the Value Data box
- Click OK
  - If there is no AutoAdminLogon entry, create the entry
    - Click Edit
    - Click New
    - Click String Value
    - Type AutoAdminLogon as the value name
    - Press Enter
    - Double-click the newly created key
    - Type 1 in the Value Data box
  - Close Registry Editor
  - Reboot
  - If you want to bypass the automatic logon to log on as a different user, hold down the SHIFT key after you log off or after Windows XP restarts
  - Note that this procedure applies only to the first logon
  - To enforce this setting for future logoffs, the administrator must set the following registry key:
- You can also use turn on automatic logon without editing the registry in Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and in Microsoft Windows XP Professional on a computer that is not joined to a domain
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - Type in
  - Click OK
  - Note When users try to display help information in the User Accounts window in Windows XP Home Edition, the help information is not displayed. Additionally, users receive the following error message:
  - Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box
  - Click Apply.
  - In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password box
  - Retype the password in the Confirm Password box
  - Click OK
  - Click OK

Create an create an Emergency Repair Disk

Open Back Up
- Click Start Button
- Click All Programs (XP, Programs (win2000)
- Accessories
- System Tools
- Backup
On the Tools menu click Create an Emergency Repair Disk
Follow the instructions that appear on your screen
Important
- You will need a blank 1.44 MB floppy disk to create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD)
- The repair process relies on information that is saved in the systemroot\repair folder
- You must not change or delete this folder
