Protect your important files

Back up or make a copy of your important and irreplaceable personal information, such as pictures, documents, music, and financial data

Is My Computer Ready To Install SP 2?

Visit the Windows Update Web site where Windows Update will scan your computer
If it lists Windows XP SP 2 as an available update, then your computer is ready for SP 2
If your computer is not ready, or if you want to install SP 2 from a CD, you should read the minimum requirements for the service pack

How To Install SP 2

When you finish downloading SP 2, the Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard appears
Here's what to do during the installation
- Make sure you have protected your personal files.
- In the Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard, click Next
  - Note: While updating your system, Windows checks your system to be sure it complies with the Service Pack 2 requirements
  - Then it archives the service pack files in case you want to remove SP 2 later
  - Finally, it installs the service pack. This can take a few minutes, so please wait
  - After the installation is complete, restart your computer
  - Make sure your security essentials are all marked ON by clicking Start
  - Click Control Panel
  - Click Security Center

Quick Tips For Successful Installation

Is everyone logged off?
- If you use Fast User Switching, be sure all other users are logged off before installing
- For help on how to do this, go to the Help and Support Center on your computer
  - Click Start
  - Click Help and Support
  - Search for "Fast User Switching."
Get the latest Windows updates
- Before you install SP 2, get your version of Windows completely up-to-date with the latest performance and security updates
  - Go to the Windows Update Web site
  - Click Express Install
  - Install all high priority updates listed
Give laptops enough power
- If you are installing SP 2 on a laptop, make sure that you have the laptop plugged in to AC power
To add yourself as an administrator
- You can either log on with the user name "Administrator" or use another account that has Administrator permissions
  - To determine which permissions you have, open the Control Panel and click User Accounts
  - The listings in the Group category will tell you what kind of access you have to your computer's settings

When You Try To Install An Update To Windows XP Service Pack 2 Or To Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, You May Receive A "0x8007f0f4" Error

Symptoms

When you try to install an update on a portable computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP 2) or on a Tablet PC that is running Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, you may receive an "0x8007F0F4" error

Cause

This problem occurs if your portable computer or your Tablet PC is running on battery power when you try to install the update that you downloaded from the Windows Update Web site or another location, such as a intranet share on a corporate network.

Solution

To resolve this problem, plug in your computer or Tablet PC, and then run it from its AC power supply before you try to install the update on your computer.

The Windows Explorer Status Bar Is Not Visible After You Install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Symptoms

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP 2), the status bar is not visible in the Windows Explorer window. (The status bar typically appears at the bottom of the window.)

Solution

To resolve this behavior and turn on the status bar, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click My Computer
- On the View menu, click Status Bar

Cannot Install A Bluetooth Device After You Install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Symptoms

If you install a Bluetooth device, the device installation appears to work correctly.
However, when you view the devices that appear under Bluetooth radios in Device Manager, the device is incorrectly identified.
If you try to configure the device, you receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
If you perform a slipstreamed upgrade of Windows XP SP 2 by using Winnt32.exe, existing Bluetooth devices may stop working correctly. For example, some of the Bluetooth device features may stop working.

Solution

Method 1: Rename the Bth.inf file
- Rename the %WINDIR%\inf\Bth.inf file to Bth.bak before you install or reinstall the third-party device or stack.
- When you rename the file, you prevent Windows Plug and Play PNP from using that INF file to install the Bluetooth driver that is included with Windows XP SP 2
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - Type in the Open box
  - Click OK
  - Right-click Bth.inf
  - Click Rename
  - Rename Bth.inf to Bth.bak
  - Press Enter
  - Install the third-party Bluetooth driver
Method 2: Update the Bluetooth driver in Device Manager
- To replace the Windows XP SP 2 installation of the Bluetooth stack, update the driver in Device Manager.
- When you do this, specify your third-party driver.
- To update the driver in Device Manager, follow these steps:
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - Type in the Open box
  - Click OK
  - Locate the device
  - Right-click the device
  - Click Update Driver
  - Follow the steps that appear on the screen in the Hardware Update Wizard to specify your third-party driver for the Bluetooth device

Web Server Functionality May Not Work Correctly After You Install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Symptoms

Assume that you use one of the following programs on a Microsoft Windows XP Professional-based computer that is configured as a Web server:
- FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions for Microsoft
- FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions for Microsoft
- SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft
In this scenario, your computer may not work correctly as a Web server after you upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP 2).
For example, you may not be able to connect to a Web site that is hosted on the Web server that is running on the Windows XP SP 2-Based computer.

Solution

Click Start
Click Run
Type in the Open box
Click OK
Right-click the network connection that you want to configure
Click Properties
Click the Advanced tab
Click Settings
Click the Advanced tab
Click Settings for the network connection
Use one of the following methods, depending on your situation:
- If IIS is configured to use port 80
  - Click to select the Web Server (HTTP) check box
  - Verify that the name or the IP address is displayed correctly in the Service Settings dialog box
  - Click OK
  - Click OK again
- If IIS is configured to use a different port
  - Click Add
  - In the Service Settings dialog box, specify the settings and the port number that you want
  - Click OK
  - Click OK again
Click OK

"Windows XP Setup Is Incompatible With This Version Of Windows" Error Message When You Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 On A Hewlett-Packard Computer

Symptoms

Windows XP Setup is incompatible with this version of Windows. For more information, contact Microsoft.

Cause

This problem occurs because Hewlett-Packard computers install Recovery Console on the computer by using the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) files that are located in the C:\Windows\I386 folder. These files cause the error message that this article describes.

Solution

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type in the Open box
  - Click OK
  - Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
  - Click Export on the File menu.
  - Locate a folder on your hard disk to save the backup in
  - Type in the File name box
  - Click Save.
  - Locate the following registry keys and delete them.
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
      CurrentVersion\Run\2056 cloaker.exe
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\

    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
      CurrentVersion\Run\2272 cloaker.exe
  - On the Edit menu, click Delete
  - Click Yes

A Message Appears In The Information Bar When You Open A Web Page That Must Download An Activex Control After You Install Windows XP SP 2

Symptoms

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP 2), when you open a Web page that must download an ActiveX control in Microsoft Internet Explorer, you receive the following message in the Information Bar:

To resolve this problem, right-click the Information Bar
Click Install ActiveX Control
You then receive a prompt to download the ActiveX control
Download and install Active X control

Computer Restarts Continuously After You Install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Symptoms

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP 2), your computer repeatedly restarts. You do not receive an error message

Cause

This problem occurs if all the following conditions are true:
- You installed the 32-bit version of Windows XP SP 2 on a computer that supports hardware-enforced data execution prevention (DEP), such as a computer with an AMD 64-bit processor
- You installed hardware that requires the Mpegport.sys driver
When you restart your computer, the Mpegport.sys driver tries to run from a memory location that is monitored by DEP.
You receive a Stop error that is similar to the following:
Your computer may restart immediately if it is configured to automatically restart when a system failure occurs

Solution

Contact the driver vendor for an updated version of the driver without the incompatibility problem
If an updated version of the driver is available, the driver can be installed in Safe Mode

Restart your computer
Press the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to select a Safe Mode option
Press Enter
Click Start
Click Run
Type in the Run box
Click OK
In the View menu, click Show hidden devices
Expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers
Right-click the Mpegport.sys driver
Click Properties
On the Driver tab
Change the Startup Type to Disabled
Click OK
Restart your computer

If you require the Mpegport.sys driver, you can also turn off DEP
- Restart your computer
- Press the F8 key.
- Use the arrow keys to select a Safe Mode option
- Press Enter
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type in the Run box
- Click OK
- At the command prompt, type the following, and then press Enter or Copy and Paste
- If you have multiple start entries or start options, you may have to manually modify the Boot.ini file for your computer. To disable DEP by modifying the Boot.ini file, change the /noexecute policy level to alwaysoff.
- Restart your computer

Computer Restarts Continuously After You Install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Symptoms

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP 2), you are prompted to restart the computer
When the computer starts, but before you can log on, the computer begins to continuously restart

Cause

This problem occurs if you have a UMAX scanner driver installed on your computer when you install Windows XP SP 2

Solution

To resolve this problem, start the computer in Safe Mode, remove the UMAX driver, remove Windows XP SP 2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP 2
Note You must contact UMAX support for information about how to remove the UMAX driver
- Restart the computer.
- When you receive the following message, press F8:
- In Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the Arrow keys to select Safe mode with Networking
- Press Enter
After you remove the UMAX driver, you must remove Windows XP SP 2 from your computer
This will make sure that the UMAX driver does not interfere with installation of Windows XP SP 2
To remove Windows XP SP 2from your computer, follow these steps:
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type in the Run box
- Click OK
- In the list of currently installed programs, click Windows XP Service Pack 2
- Click Remove
- Click Yes
- Restart the computer
You can now reinstall Windows XP SP 2

"Windows Was Unable To Install The Modem" Error Message When You Try To Install A Modem On Your Windows XP Service Pack 2-Based Computer

Error Message

When you try to install a serial modem or a universal serial bus (USB) modem on your Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP 2)-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
This problem occurs if there are no entries under the following Windows registry subkey:
This problem may occur after you remove third-party modem software from your computer

Solution

To resolve this problem, repopulate the subkey with the correct entries and values, as follows if they differ
- Subkey:
  - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Modem
    - Entry Name: ErrorControl
      Type: REG_DWORD
      Value: 0
    - Entry Name: Group

You Cannot Roll Back A Device Driver To A Previously Installed Driver After You Install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

Symptoms

You cannot roll back a device driver to a previously installed driver by using Device Manager after you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP 2)

Cause

This problem occurs because no back up file is created for the previously installed driver of a third-party device when you install Windows XP SP 2

Solution

Click Start
Click Run
Type in the Open box
Click OK
Double-click the type of device that you want to reinstall
Double-click the specific device that you want to reinstall
Click the Driver tab
Click Update Driver to open the Hardware Update Wizard
Follow the Hardware Update Wizard instructions

You Cannot Install Paint Shop Pro 8 On A Windows XP Service Pack 2-Based Computer

Symptoms

When you try to install Paint Shop Pro 8 on a computer that is based on Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP 2), the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) dialog box appears.
After you click any one of the options in the dialog box to continue installing the software, the program closes, and the installation is not completed.
Following are the options that appear in the dialog box:

Cause

This issue occurs when you try to install Paint Shop Pro on a computer whose processor has the no-execute (NX) page-protection feature enabled. DEP prevents the installation of the software.

Solution

Instead of using the Autorun.exe program that starts when you insert the CD-ROM in the CD drive, use the Setup program to install Paint Shop Pro:
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type the following in the Open dialog box
- Click OK
- Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation

Smart Tags Do Not Appear In Outlook 2003 After You Install Windows XP SP 2

Symptoms

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP 2), smart tags do not appear in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003

Cause

This behavior occurs because Windows XP SP 2 makes some security changes in Outlook 2003 that causes smart tags not to persist in Microsoft Outlook.
This behavior does not occur when users install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Solution

To resolve this behavior, install Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) after you install Windows XP SP 2 Additionally, you must make the following changes to the registry
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type in the Open box
- Click OK
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
- On the Edit menu, point to New
- Click Key
- Type
- Press Enter
- On the Edit menu, point to New
- Click DWORD Value.
- Type
- Press Enter
- Double-click #default#ieooui
- Type 1 in the Value Data box

Configure The Firewall To Allow Remote Assistance

Error

When you use the Windows XP, Help and Support, Offer Remote Assistance to offer assistance to a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2, you get the message
This happens even when the following are true on the target computer
- The Windows Firewall configuration has these Exceptions enabled:
  - File and Print Sharing
  - Remote Assistance
- This policy setting is Enabled (either locally using gpedit.msc, or in a Windows 2000 or 2003 Domain using Group Policies) Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Remote Assistance/Offer Remote Assistance
- The (expert) user logged on at the source computer (the user making the Offer of Remote Assistance) is in the list of "Helpers" in the "Offer Remote Assistance" policy setting

Solution

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Windows Firewall
Click Exceptions tab
Click Add a Programs and add the following
- %systemroot%\system32\sessmgr.exe
- %systemroot%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries\helpsvc.exe
Click Add a Port
Add TCP 135
Note: The pre-defined Exception - Remote Assistance - includes the exception for sessmgr.exe; in most cases, you do not have to explicitly add the Program Exception for sessmgr.exe
To configure these exceptions using Local Policies or Group Policies (in a Windows 2000 or 2003 Domain), add the following settings under
- For computers in a Windows 2000 or 2003 domain, these would normally be added under the Domain profile
- For computers not in a Windows domain, these must be added under the Standard profile read the MS Knowledgebase article Network Determination Behavior for Network-Related Group Policy Settings
Windows Firewall: Define
- Program exceptions: Enabled
  - %systemroot%\system32\sessmgr.exe:*:enabled:sessmgr.exe
  - %systemroot%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries\helpsvc.exe:*:enabled:helpsvc.exe
- Windows Firewall: Define port exceptions: Enabled
  - 135:TCP:*:enabled:Port 135
Note: the "*" enables the exception for any IP address (including any on the public Internet)
To limit access to these exceptions only from computers in the same IP subnet (the local network - LAN), replace the * with the word localsubnet More Information
- There are two modes of Remote Assistance:
  - Solicited, in which the novice sends a request for assistance to an expert (e.g. via e-mail) and the expert responds to start the Remote Assistance session
  - Offered, in which the expert initiates the Remote Assistance session by sending an offer to the novice's computer
- In Windows XP, there is no shortcut predefined for Offer Remote Assistance.
  - To Offer Remote Assistance from a Windows XP workstation
    - Click Start
    - Click Help and Support
    - Click Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems or key the word offer in the Search text box and press Enter (or click the button with the white arrow on the green button)
    - Click Offer Remote Assistance under Tools or Suggested Topics
  - The predefined Windows Firewall Exception Remote Assistance allows Solicited Remote Assistance to work, but not Offered Remote Assistance
  - To receive Offers of Remote Assistance, the target (novice's) computer must accept incoming connections to sessmgr.exe, helpsvc.exe and on TCP port 135
  - By default, the Windows XP SP 2 Windows Firewall feature blocks incoming connections to sessmgr.exe, helpsvc.exe and TCP port 135
  - If the predefined Exception called Remote Assistance is enabled, incoming connections to sessmgr.exe are already allowed

Uninstall Windows Firewall

Click Start
Click Run
Type or copy and paste
The services windows will open
Scroll down Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Right click on Windows Firewall/Internet Connection and select properties
In the dropdown menu left click on startup type and select disabled
Click ok
With the firewall highlighted click in blue letters Stop
Exit the services window
Click Start
Click Run
Type in or copy and paste
The command window will open, type or copy and paste
Press the Enter key
- Note: you may get an error again
Type Exit and the window will close.
This will uninstall the firewall

How Do I Uninstall McAfee's Personal Firewall/Plus?

- The product should begin to uninstall
- Follow the prompts that appear on the screen.
- Note: If at any time you are prompted to remove shared files, answer Yes
- If you receive error messages or find that the product was not completely removed, follow the steps below to manually remove the program
Manual Uninstall of Personal Firewall/Plus
- Shut down the computer (turn it off)
- Wait 20 seconds
- Boot into Safe Mode
  - Turn on the computer and immediately press the F8 key on the keyboard, once every second
  - Note: If you get a keyboard error, press the F1 key and continue pressing the F8 key once every second
  - The Windows Startup Menu appears. Select option #3 (Safe Mode).
  - Press the Enter key
  - Note: This may take longer than a normal boot
  - A dialog box confirms that Windows is in Safe Mode
  - Click OK
- Delete the Personal Firewall folders
  - Click Start Button
  - Click Run
  - Type Explorer
  - Click OK
  - Double-click My Computer
  - Double-click C: drive
  - Delete the MC?????.tmp folder(s), if present
  - Note: ? = these could be numbers or letters
  - From the C: drive, double-click Program Files
  - Double-click McAfee
  - If present, delete the Personal Firewall folder and MPF folder
  - Perform a search on your C: drive for a file named STATUS.MPF and delete any instance found
  - This file will most likely be found in C:Windows\System or C:\Windows\System32, depending upon your operating system
- Backup the registry
  - Click Start Button
  - Click Run
  - Type regedit
  - Click OK
  - The Registry Editor appears
  - On the menu toolbar click File
  - Click Export
  - The Export Registry File dialog box appears
  - In the 'Save in' drop-down menu, select Desktop
  - In the 'File Name' field, type backup
  - In the 'Export range' section, select All
  - Click Save
  - Note: To restore the registry, double-click on the backup file you just created and follow the prompts
  - After completing all of these steps and verifying that everything is working properly, delete this file to avoired storing the old registry
- Delete the registry keys
  - Click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  - Click the + next to SOFTWARE
  - Click the + next to McAfee.com
  - Delete any instance of a Personal Firewall folder or MPF folder
  - Close the Registry Editor
  - Restart your computer
- Remove ActiveX components
  - Double Click My Computer
  - Double Click the C drive icon
  - Double Click the Windows folder
  - Note: This folder name may be WINNT for users with Windows 2000 or XP upgraded from 2000
  - Double Click the Downloaded Program Files folder
  - Delete any McAfee ActiveX components
    - Examples: McAfee.com Operating system class, McAfee Installer Class, McAfee TYP class, McAfee Tree class
- Note: Browse the folder and if you see a component that you are unsure of what program it belongs to like long random names with numbers and letters, double click on it and look under the code base
- If its from Download.McAfee.com, then delete it

You May Receive A "Limited Or No Connectivity" After You Install Windows Xp Service Pack 2 or an Error 678 Or Error 769

Error Message

Limited or no connectivity: The connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources.
You may also receive error message 678 or error message 769

Solution

You May Receive This Message Even If Your Computer Is Currently Connected To The Internet
- To disable the message
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - Type in the run box
  - Click OK
  - Double-click Local Area Connection
  - Click Properties
  - On the General tab, click to clear the Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity check box
  - Click OK
  - Click Close
- Code 678 - There is no answer
- Code 679 - Cannot detect carrier
  - This applies to all versions of Windows
    - To trouble shoot these errors do the following.
      - Check the number you are dialing to be sure the number is correct
      - Use modem's speaker to listen to connection attempt: Make sure it dials, and make sure you hear remote modem answer tones.
      - Try dialing the number with regular phone, you should hear sounds of the server trying to make a connection to the computer and not a voice, busy tone or wrong number
      - Check the Modemlog to be sure the correct number is dialed and not a wrong one. (If the number dialed is not displayed, adding E1 to extra settings may help.
      - If you hear your modem handshake (sounds like static), and 678 error appears at same time handshake sound ends
        
        Try disabling the dialup modem in the device manager, not the network card
        
        Increase the Cancel Call if not connected' time:
        
        Open ControlPanel
        
        Open Modems
        
        Click on the Properties Button
        
        Click Connection
  - Correct The Problem If You Have No Connectivity
    - Download and follow the instructions in this Microsoft Fix
    - Reboot your computer
