Remote Assistance Features
Use the following features of the Remote Assistance dialog box to participate in the remote assistance session:
• The Connection Status box displays the following information:
  • The name of the assistant.
  • Whether you are connected or disconnected.
  • The assistant's privileges during this session.
    Example Screen View Only.
• The Stop Control (ESC) button. Press the ESCAPE key to stop the computer from being remotely controlled.
  When you press ESCAPE, you receive the following message
  • User name or Assistant has stopped remote control by pressing the ESC key, or a key sequence or combination including the ESC key.
• Where User name is the name of the logged on user, and where Assistant is the name of the remote assistant.
• The Send a File button.
  • Use this button to initiate file transfers between the local and remote computer.
• The Start Talking button.
  • Use this button to initiate voice chat with the remote assistant.
• The Settings button.
  • Use this button to adjust quality settings according to the connection speed that you have.
• The Disconnect button.
  • Use this button to terminate the Remote Assistance session.
• The Help button.
  Provides Remote Assistance help.
• The Message Entry box.
  • Use this box to type messages to the remote assistant in real time. Click the Send button, or press ENTER to send the message.
• The Chat History window.
  • This window records the text messages typed by you and the remote assistant.

Using Remote Assistance
• When the Remote Assistance window is displayed, the remote desktop is displayed in the right pane. You can view the remote computer screen and chat with the user in real time. If you receive permission, you can take control of the remote computer.
  
• NOTE: It is recommended that the remote user does not use the mouse while you control the computer.
  Enable Remote Assistance in Windows XP

  • Sometimes the best way to fix a problem is to have someone show you how. The Remote Assistance feature in Windows XP is a convenient way for an administrator to connect to your computer and walk you through the solution. After connecting to your computer, an administrator can view your screen and chat online with you about what you both see. With your permission, the administrator can use his or her mouse and keyboard to work with you on your computer.
  Enabling Remote Assistance in Control Panel
  • Click Start
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click Performance and Maintenance
  • Click System.
  • Click the Remote tab.
  • Verify that the Allow Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from this computer check box is selected.
  • Click Advanced to set the amount of time that you want to enable access to your computer.
  • If you want the user who connects to take control of your computer
    • Click to select the Allow this computer to be controlled remotely check box.
  • Click OK.
  Enable Remote Assistance in the Registry
  • WARNING:
    • If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Type regedit.exe
  • Click OK to start Registry Editor.
  • Locate and click the following key:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
      Control\Terminal Server
  • Double-click the AllowTSConnections value.
    NOTE: If this value does not exist, create it as a DWORD value.
  • Set the AllowTSConnections value to 1 to enable connections, or set it to 0 to deny connections.
  • Click OK.
  • Quit Registry Editor. Remote Assistance is enabled immediately; there is no need to restart the computer.
  Using Offer Remote Assistance
  Summary
  
  • You can configure Remote Assistance so that administrators, support personnel, or any user, can offer assistance to other users without requiring them to initiate the Remote Assistance session. This capability is called "Unsolicited Remote Assistance," and is designed for use in Enterprise corporations that are using domains. By default, this feature is turned off, and it can only be turned on through the Unattend.txt file, or by using group policies.
  Requirements for Using Offer Remote Assistance
  
  • Both the novice and expert computers must be running Windows XP.
  • The novice and expert users are members of the same domain, or are members of trusting domains.
  • The expert must be a member of the local administrators group on the novice's computer.
  • Both the novice and expert computers must be connected to the Internet, or the same LAN or WAN.
  After you set up the novice's computer:
  
  • On the expert computer, click Start
  • Click Help and Support
  • Click Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems.
  • On the Tools menu, click Offer Remote Assistance.
  • On the Offer Remote Assistance page, type the computer name or the IP address of the computer to which you are trying to offer remote assistance, and then click Connect.
  • You will be prompted to choose which user you want to assist from a drop down menu.
  • After you choose the user you want to assist, click Start Remote Assistance.
  • When the user to be helped receives the Remote Assistance offer and clicks Yes, the Remote Assistance session starts. If needed, an administrator can then request control of the novice's computer.
    • NOTE: The Offer Remote Assistance feature is not a viable option for most home-based networks, and it is not available on Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.

Provide Remote Assistance in Response to an E-mail Invitation in Windows XP

• This step-by-step article describes how to provide help by using the Remote Assistance feature in Windows XP in response to an E-mail invitation.
• Remote Assistance enables you to establish a connection to a remote computer through the Internet.
• This connection can be used to view the computer screen, participate in real-time chat, and remotely control that computer (when you have permission to do so).
Provide Help by Using Remote Assistance
• The following requirements must be met before you can use Remote Assistance:
  • Both the local and the remote computer must be using either Windows Messenger or a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI)-compliant E-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.
  • Both computers must be connected to the Internet while using Remote Assistance.

• Start your E-mail program. When you have been requested to provide remote assistance, an E-mail message with the following subject is displayed in the Inbox, where USER_NAME@COMPANY.COM is the E-mail address of the person inviting you to provide remote assistance.
  • YOU HAVE RECEIVED A REMOTE ASSISTANCE INVITATION FROM: USER_NAME@COMPANY.COM
• This message contains the following information as well as an attachment:
  USER_NAME@COMPANY.COM would like your assistance. A personal message may be included below.
• You can easily provide assistance from your computer by following the instructions that are described at the following Microsoft Web site:
  http://windows.microsoft.com/RemoteAssistance/en/RA.htm
• Caution:
  
  • Accept invitations only from people you know and trust.
  • E-mail messages can contain viruses or other harmful attachments.
  • Before opening the attachment, review the security precautions and information at the above address.
• Personal message:
  • Please help me solve this problem.
• Open the attached file.
• If an Opening Mail Attachment dialog box is displayed, click Open it, and then click OK.
• The following Remote Assistance message is displayed, where User_name is the name of the user who invited you to provide remote assistance:
  • Do you want to connect to User_name's computer now?
• Click Yes, and then type your password if you are prompted.
• NOTE: If you are prompted to type a password, you must obtain this password from the person who you are assisting.
• The remote user is prompted to accept your connection to the computer. When the remote user accepts this connection, the remote session is established.

Obtain Remote Assistance Using Windows Messenger in Windows XP

  • Under Remote Assistance, click Invite someone to help you.
  • Under Use Windows Messenger, click the contact that you want to invite, and then click Invite this person.
  • NOTE: The contact that you want to invite must be online.
    • You receive the following message, where Assistant is the name of the assistant that you invited:
    • Inviting Assistant to connect to your computer. Please wait for a response
    • Invitation is accepted.
  • After the remote assistant accepts your invitation, click Yes when you receive the following message:
  • Assistant has accepted your Remote Assistance invitation and is ready to connect to your computer.
  • Do you want to let this person view your screen and chat with you?
• If the remote assistant wants to remotely control the computer, click Yes to accept the request when you receive the following message, where Assistant is the name of the remote assistant:
  • Assistant would like to share control of your computer to help solve the problem.
  • Do you wish to let Assistant share control of your computer?
  • The remote assistant can now control your computer remotely. This includes the ability to shut down the computer.
  • NOTE: Do not use the mouse while the remote assistant controls the computer.

Provide Help by Using Remote Assistance
• The following requirements must be met before you can use Remote Assistance:
  • Both the local and the remote computer must be using either Windows Messenger or a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI)-compliant E-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.
  • Both computers must be connected to the Internet while using Remote Assistance.
  • NOTE: If your computer is behind a firewall, you may need to reconfigure the firewall to allow Remote Assistance. Contact your network administrator before you use Remote Assistance.
• To provide help by using Remote Assistance:
  • Log on to Windows Messenger. When you have been requested to provide remote assistance, you receive the following Windows Messenger invitation, where User_name is the alias of the person requesting remote assistance:
    • User_name is inviting you to start using Remote Assistance. Do you want to Accept (ALT+T) or Decline (ALT+D) the invitation?
  • Click Accept, or press ALT+T. You receive the following Windows Messenger message:
    • You have accepted the invitation from User_name to start using Remote Assistance.
• The remote user is prompted to accept your connection to the computer. When the remote user accepts this connection, the remote session is established.

Change the E-mail Program That Is Used By Remote Assistance
• By default, Remote Assistance use the E-mail program that Microsoft Internet Explorer identifies as its default E-mail program.
• To change the default E-mail program:
  • Click Start
  • Click Control Panel
  • Double-click Internet Options.
  • Click the Programs tab.
  • In the E-mail box, click the E-mail program you want to use
  • Click OK.
  • NOTE: Hotmail, MSN Explorer, and AOL do not work with Remote Assistance. For additional information about this limitation, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    299282 Cannot Use MSN EXPLORER or AOL To Send a Remote Assistance Invitation

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

• If you have Spybot installed open it go to the Immunized tab and make sure the check is out of the "lock IE Control Panel"
• Also Norton Works and McAfee Utilities are known to sometimes cause this.
• If the above doesn't help try the following:
  • Go to Start
  • Click on Run and type in:
    regedit
  • Click on the Edit
  • Click on Find and type in:
    NoControlPanel
  • In the Find field.
    When you find an entry, right click on the entry and either delete it or modify the value to 0.
    • Press the F3 key to continue the search (it may be in more than one place)
    • Close the registry editor. You may need to reboot for the change to be effective.

  • How to find a corrupt file in the control panel.
    • To resolve this problem, determine which .cpl file is damaged, remove the file, and then reinstall it.
      • Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
        
      • In the Named box, type *Cpl.
      • In the Look In box, type c:\<windows>\system, where <windows> is the name of your Windows folder.
      • Click Find Now.
      • Double-click one of the .cpl files. If the file is damaged, an invalid page fault occurs in Kernel32.dll. If an invalid page fault does not occur, repeat this step with each .cpl file until an invalid page fault occurs. The file that causes the error message to be displayed is the file that is damaged.
      • On the File menu in the Find window, click Close.
      • Delete or rename the damaged .cpl file in the Windows\System folder.
      • Open Control Panel to verify that it is functioning properly.
      • Extract a new copy of the .cpl file you removed from your original Windows disks or CD-ROM.

Add a program to the right-click option Of the Start Button
• Type the following in the Open text entry box
  Regedit
• Click OK.
• When the Registry Editor opens, go to the menu across the top and click Registry
• Choose export registry file,
• Give it a file name (backup.reg), and save the file.
• This file can serve as a backup if necessary.
• In the left pane of the Regedit window, click on the plus sign next to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT to expand it.
• Scroll down to Folder (the entries are listed alphabetically), and click on the plus sign next to it to expand it.
• You should see subfolders (keys) listed, like Defaulticon, shell and shellex.
• Click on the plus sign next to Shell to expand it.
• The items shown when you right click Start will be shown as individual keys.
  (Norton May Not Show Here, Norton's adds there through their program)
• Make sure Shell is highlighted
• Click Edit
• Select New
• Select Key
• A new key will be made with the name "New Key #1"
• It will be highlighted so that you can give it the name of your choice.
• In the right pane of RegEdit shows the Name is (Default), and the Data is (value not set).
• Change the name of the new key by typing exactly what you want to see on the list when you right click Start.
• This entry is only for display and association purposes.
• When finished, click the [Enter] key on your keyboard.
• With the new key you just made highlighted
• Click Edit
• Select New
• Select Key.
• Again, a new key will be shown. Rename this key command. That is - type command for the new name, and press [Enter].
• In the right pane of RegEdit, click on the little icon that has ab on it. The word (Default) will highlight.
• Click Edit
• Choose Modify.
• A box will open with a slot for you to make a Value Data entry.
• In the Value Data slot, type the full path of the program you want to start when that item on the Right Click Start list is clicked.
• When you press [Enter], the value you just assigned will be shown in the right pane, and it will be enclosed in double quotation marks.
• Close RegEdit.
• Now right click start and see the new selection.

"Logoff" and "Shutdown" Are Missing From the Start Menu When You Use Remote Desktop<
• By default, Disconnect is the only command that is listed on the Classic Start menu. By default, the Log Off command is available when you use the standard Start menu. To return the Log Off command to the Classic Start menu:
• Right-click the taskbar, and then click Properties .
• Click the Start Menu tab.
• The option for Classic Start menu should be selected. Click Customize .
• Under Advanced Start menu options
• Click to select the Display Log Off check box
• Click OK
• Click OK again
