Print or Hide Web Headers and Footers

You can change the settings in the Page Set up to change what prints in the header area and footer area of a web page.

Below is an image of the Page Setup
- Header
  - Right align Page number
- Footer
  - Left align web address
  - Right align short date

Use one of the Methods below to change these settings

Method 1 Using Page Set Up in Internet Explorer

Open Internet Explorer
Click File

Choose Page Setup

Here is a list: of the codes and what they are

&w	Web page title
&u	Page address (URL)
&d	Date in short format
&D	Date in long format
&t	Time in short format
T&	Time in 24-hour format
&p	Current page number
&P	Total number of pages
&b	Right-aligned text (following &b)
&b&b	Centered text (between &b&b)
&&	A single ampersand (&)

Method 2 Using the Registry to Change the DEFAULT Settings
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type
- Click OK
- When the registry editors opens find the following keys below and change them using the code above
  - Page Margins, Microsoft Internet Explorer first tries to get the values from this registry key:
    - If there is no such a key, Internet Explorer create this key by copying the values from the following:
      - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PageSetup
        
        If there is no such key, default values are provided.
  - Header and Footer, the values are picked up from the following:
    - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PageSetup
      - If there is no such key, default values are provided. The defaults are 0.75 for margins
    - Internet Explorer default printer, default values are provided from:
      - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PageSetup\printer
        
        The developer could alter the above registry entries for the printing settings accordingly.

Error Message When You Print from Internet Explorer: Printing Error: The Printer Cannot Be Found or The Specified Module Could Not Be Found

Error Message

When you attempt to print from Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may receive an error message similar to the following but can vary some.
- Printing Error: The printer cannot be found or Error the specified module could not be found
- Internet Explorer script error
  Line (This can be any line number)
  Char: 1
  Unspecified error:
  Code 0 URL: res://c:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll/preview.dlg
You may be able to print a test page and print from other programs, such as Microsoft Word, but you cannot print from Internet Explorer.

Cause

This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:
- The printer driver is damaged.
- The Iepeers.dll file is damaged or is the incorrect version.
- The spool settings for the printer are incorrect.

Solution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, as appropriate to your situation.
- Method 1 Remove and reinstall the printer driver.
  - If you are using a third-party driver provided by your printer manufacturer instead of a driver included with Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), follow the instructions provided by your printer manufacturer to remove and then reinstall your printer driver.
    - Click Start
    - Point to Settings
    - Point to Control Panel
    - Click Add/Remove Programs
    - On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the item listed for your printer (if the item is displayed in the list), and then click Add/Remove
    - Click Start
    - Point to Settings
    - Click Printers
    - Right-click the printer name
    - Click Delete
    - Double-click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard
    - Click Next
    - Follow the instructions in the Add Printer Wizard to install the printer driver
    - Repeat the steps to remove and reinstall all printers in your Printers folder.
    - Note: You may want to install the most current printer driver available for your printer.
    - To obtain the latest printer drivers, contact your printer manufacturer.
    - For information about how to contact your printer manufacturer, read the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
      - 65416 Hardware and Software Third-Party Vendor Contact List A-K
      - 60781 Hardware and Software Third-Party Vendor Contact List L-P
      - 60782 Hardware and Software Third-Party Vendor Contact List, Q-Z
- Method 2 Extract the original Iepeers.dll file from the Windows Me CD-ROM, and then replace the Iepeers.dll file on your hard disk. Windows 98 use the System File Checker program to extract the file.
  - Note:
    - Do not use this method if you have installed Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 (SP 1) and Internet Tools.
    - The Iepeers.dll file included in Internet Explorer 5.5 SP 1 is a later version of the file than the version that is on the Windows Me CD-ROM.
    - To determine which version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer, start</ul>, and then click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu. If "SP 1" appears in the Update Versions line, this means that Internet Explorer 5.5 SP 1 and Internet Tools are installed, and you have the latest version of Iepeers.dll file for Internet Explorer 5.5
  - Click Start
  - Point to Search
  - Click For Files or Folders
  - In the Search for files or folders named box type
  - Click Search
  - In the Search Results list, right-click Iepeers.dll
  - Click Rename
  - Insert your Windows Me CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
  - Press and hold down the Shift key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically.
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - In the Open box type
  - Click OK
  - In the System Configuration Utility dialog box
  - Click Extract File
  - In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box type
  - Click Start
  - In the Restore from box, click Browse
  - Browse to the x:\win9x folder (where x is your CD-ROM drive)
  - Click OK
  - In the Save file in box, click Browse
  - Browse to your x\Windows\System folder (where x is the drive on which Windows Me is installed)
  - Click OK
  - Click OK to extract the file
  - Click OK in response to the The file has been successfully extracted message
  - Click OK to close the System Configuration Utility dialog box
  - Register the Iepeers.dll file:
    - Click Start
    - Click Run
    - In the Open box type
    - Click OK
  - Restart your computer
Method 3 Specify different spool settings for the printer
- To do this, follow these steps:
  - Click Start
  - Point to Settings
  - Click Printers
  - Right-click the printer
  - Click Properties
  - On the Details tab, click Spool Settings
  - Click Start print job so program finishes printing faster
  - Click Start printing after last page is spooled
  - Click OK
  - Restart your computer
  - Start Internet Explorer
  - Attempt to print a Web page
  - If this does not resolve the issue, repeat 3 steps above
  - Click Print directly to the printer
  - Click OK
  - Restart your computer
More Information
Method 4
- Windows XP
  - Set the computer to show all files and folders
  - Make sure ie.inf exists in c:\windows\inf
  - Browse to the file ie.inf located at c:\windows\inf and right click and click install
  - This basically reinstalls Internet Explorer
  - NOTE: The \inf folder under c:\windows is a hidden folder. Be sure to fix your view first.
- Win 98, ME and 2K
  - Open Add/remove Programs
  - Click Internet Explorer 6 and Tools
  - Click Add/Remove Button
  - Choose Repair in the menu
  - Click Okay

Doesn't print correctly from the Internet

This is usually related to the printer drivers not being compatible with the newer versions of IE and OEX.
Look to Printers webpage and download the most recent drivers for the printer and install them.
To be sure you get a clean install, I'd suggest you first delete the printer and then reinstall it using the new drivers.

Printing part of a web site page:

Select the part of the page you want to print
Click on File
Click on Print
Put a tick or check in the "Selection"
Click OKAY
Using Netscape you cannot use "Selection" you have to choose certain pages or all pages.

Can't Print Header or Footer from Web Pages:

Method 1

Go to File
Click on Page Setup
Make sure that &w&bPage &p of &P is in the header and &u&b&d is in the footer.

Method 2: (If yours prints correctly DO NOT make these changes)

Go to file, print, page set up and change the following in the footer
- In I.E. click File
- Page Setup
- You'll have a box for Header and one for Footer. Use the settings below to have the #of page(s) print at top and url / date at bottom.
  - Header = &w&bPage &p of &P
  - Footer = &u&b&d

Change the margins to .8

Method 4

Removing and reinstalling the printer driver.
OR
Updating my current printer driver with a new one found the HP site.

Only the Text at the Top of the Web Page Is Printed:

Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows 98
Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows 98 Second Edition
Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows 2000
Internet Explorer version 5.5 for Windows 95

To enable the use of style sheets either remove the entry named "Use StyleSheets" or change the value from "No" to "Yes" by using the following steps:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- Type regedit and click OKAY
- Locate and click the following registry key:
  - HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/
    InternetExplorer/Main
  - If the Use StyleSheets is displayed in the right pane of Registry Editor perform one of the following steps:
    - To remove this key, right-click Use StyleSheets and click Delete.
    OR
    - Change the value from "No" to "Yes". To do this double-click Use StyleSheets, change "No" to "Yes", and then click OKAY
  - Close Registry Editor
  - NOTE:
    - If the entry does not exist, you are able to use style sheets.
    - Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

Printer Operation Cannot Continue Due To Lack Of Resources. The Print Subsystem Is Unavailable

Error Message

When trying to add a printer (via "Add Printer" in Control Panel > Printers, or Start > Settings > Printers) a dialog box appears containing the following error:
- Printer operation cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable

Cause

This error indicates a problem with the Print Spooler service - typically it is not running

Solution

Check that the Print Spooler service is running:
- Click Start
- Click Settings
- Click Control Panel
- Click Administrative Tools
- Click Services
- Find the service Print Spooler
- Check that it is set to Automatic start-up
- If it is not running then start it right click it and select Start
