How to save your work if the computer freezes:

If your PC locks up while you're working in Office, do not to end task, but power off. If you end task, document recovery does NOT work. If they power off, it does.

Find Fast:

If you attempt to turn off the Find Fast control panel by removing the Microsoft Office program from the Startup folder, the following problems may occur:
The index files are not removed from the hard disk. The size of these index files depends on the number and size of Office documents and files stored on your computer.
Office programs continue to use the existing index files whenever you click Open on the File menu.
When you turn off Find Fast by removing the Office shortcut, the index files are not updated as you create, delete, or modify documents. This may prevent you from finding files you want or cause unnecessary delays when you open files.

Turn Off the Find Fast Indexer:

To turn off Find Fast, delete the Find Fast index files by following these steps:
On the Start menu, point to Settings and then click Control Panel.
In the Control Panel, double-click Find Fast.
In the "Index for documents in and below" list, click the first item.
On the Index menu, click Delete Index. In the Delete Index dialog box, click OK. When you are prompted to delete the index, click OK.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 until no more indexes are listed.
Click the Index menu. If the "Run When I Log On" check box is selected, click it to clear the check box.
On the Index menu, click Close and Stop. If you are prompted to stop Find Fast, click OK.

Remove the Find Fast control panel, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel. Click to select Microsoft Office 2000 in the list and click Add/Remove.
In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Add or Remove Features.
In the Microsoft Office 2000: Update Features dialog box; expand the list of Office Tools components.
Click Find Fast Control Panel and click Not Available. Click Update Now.

Turn on Find Fast, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel. Select Microsoft Office 2000 in the list and click Add/Remove.
In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box; click Add or Remove Features.
In the Microsoft Office 2000: Update Features dialog box, expand the list of Office Tools components.
Click Find Fast Control Panel and click Run from My Computer. Click Update Now.

Saving Space Using WinZip:

Do you have a folder with lots of .txt or other files that when "ZIPPED" really compress?
Try this to save valuable disk space:
- Zip all the files into one big "ZIPPED" file.
- Then delete the UNZIPPED files and keep the ZIP file in the original folder.
- Then when you want to see a particular file, open the main "ZIP" file but don't extract the files, just double click the file of interest right in the WinZip screen and it will open.
- If you modify the file and save your changes in the normal fashion, WinZip sees the change and asks if you want to update the file in the ZIP to which you of course say yes or OK.
The net result is your files take up a lot less disk space and the files are easily accessible.
- I have a group of .txt files that ZIPPED are just over one Meg but unzipped are over 7.5 Megs!

Tricks and Tricks for Access:
Add a Description for your Database Objects:

In Microsoft Access, you can give each of your Database Objects a Description. An Object's Description appears next to the Object's Name in the Database Window when you click Details on the View menu. Although descriptions can be up to 255 characters, you may want to keep them short so that you can view the entire description in the Database Window. To add a description for a Database Object, right-click the Object in the Database Window, click Properties on the Shortcut Menu, and then type your description in the Description Box.

Change the Default Working Folder:

Whenever you create a new Microsoft Access Database (.mdb) File or open an existing one, Access saves it to or opens it from the Default Working Folder. You can change the Default Working Folder for Access Database Files to any folder on your computer by typing the path for the new folder in the Default Database Folder Box on the General Tab of the Options Dialog Box (Tools Menu).

Error message:

"Microsoft Access can't start because there is no license for it on this machine" This is a very common error and it is caused by a problem with an installed font. Here is MS Knowledge base article for fixing it.

Create a Vertical Control:

In Microsoft Access 2000, you can create a Vertical Label or Text Box on a Form or Report by setting the Vertical Property of the Control.

Hiding the New Object Shortcuts:

Microsoft Access 2000 provides shortcuts in the Database Window that you can use to create new Database Objects quickly. For Tables, Queries, Forms, Reports, and Data Access Pages, there are shortcuts for using a Wizard to create the object and for opening the object in Design View. You may want to remove these shortcuts from the Database Window to allow more room for your own Database Objects. To do so, clear the New Object Shortcuts check box on the View Tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu).

Set a Label or Text Box for Vertical Display:

Open the Form or Report in Design View.
Click the Label or Text Box.
On the View Menu, click Properties, and then click the Other Tab.
Set the Vertical Property to "Yes".

Tips and Tricks for Excel:
Apply Text and Graphic Formatting Multiple Times in Office:

Select the item whose format you would like to copy.
To copy the selected format to several items, double-click the Format Painter Button. The button stays selected, or "Sticky."
Select the text or graphic where you want to apply the new format.
When you're finished applying the format, click the Format Painter Button again or press ESC.
Note
- Applying text and graphics formatting multiple times does not work between programs. For example, you CANNOT apply formatting from Word to Power Point.

Access won't accept password:

If you lock yourself out of Access, you may have created a workgroup.
To get rid of the workgroup, find and delete the *.mda file
The file is either system.mda or workgroupname.mda.

Change Default Colors:

Excel uses Windows Colors for several of its elements. You can change these colors for Excel by changing the Windows Colors.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Display icon in Control Panel, click the Appearance Tab, and click the element you want to change in the Item Box.
You can then click the color and font color you want for each item.
3D Objects Sets the background color of the Excel row numbers and column letters, and also the inactive sheet tabs. The font color sets the color of the row numbers and column letters, and the text on inactive sheet tabs.

Changing the Gridline Color:

You can set this color in Excel. On the Tools Menu, click Options, click the View Tab, and, under Window Options, click the color you want in the Color List.

Enter URLS as text in Excel:

When you type an Internet Address in a cell, such as www.example.microsoft.com, Excel automatically turns the address into a hyperlink. To store the address as regular text instead, type an apostrophe (') before the address. For instance, if you type 'www.example.microsoft.com, you'll see the address text in the cell, without the apostrophe, and the text won't be a hyperlink.
If Excel has already turned an address into a hyperlink, you can deactivate it. Right-click the cell, point to Hyperlink on the Shortcut Menu, and then click Remove Hyperlink.

Finding Worksheet Functions in Excel:

On the Worksheet, select the cell you want to insert the Function into.
On the Insert Menu, click Function.
If the Office Assistant does not appear with a balloon asking if you want help, click the Office Assistant Button in the lower-left corner of the Paste Function Dialog Box.
In the Assistant Balloon, click Help with this feature or Yes, please provide help.
In the Assistant Balloon, enter a brief description of what you want to do, such as amortize a loan, and then click Search.
For a list of functions to help you begin your search, see the Recommended Category in the Function Category List in the Paste Function Dialog Box.

Forgot a Function's Arguments while entering it in Excel?

Press CTRL+A on your keyboard, and the Formula Palette is displayed to show you a description of the function, a description of each of the arguments for the function, and even the result of your calculation.

Hide results when Formulas Calculate Error Values in Excel:

You may not want the results of a formula to be displayed in your Worksheet when the Formula Calculation results in an Error Value. In Excel, you can hide error values by using Conditional Formatting or Conditional Formulas.
The error value #DIV/0! is the result of a formula in cell D1 that tries to divide the value in cell C1 by the value in cell B1, which is empty.
You could delete the formula from the cell, of course. But, you want to keep it so that it calculates and displays valid results when a value is entered in B1. You can do this with Conditional Formatting in Excel 2000.
Just follow these steps
- Select the cell or cells that contain formulas that may calculate error results that you don't want to display.
- On the Format Menu, click Conditional Formatting.
- In the Conditional Formatting Dialog Box click the Condition 1 List and click Formula Is.
- In the box to the right of the Condition 1 List, enter the following formula.
- =ISERROR(cell_reference)
- where cell_reference is the relative reference of the active cell in the selection.
- When you select a range of cells to conditionally format, the formula must evaluate each cell in the range.
- However, when you enter only the relative reference of the active cell in the selection, Excel adjusts the references to the other cells relative to the active cell.
- Click the Format Button.
- In the Format Cells Dialog Box, click the white color in the Color List.
- Click OK in the Format Cells Dialog Box, and then click OK in the Conditional Formatting Dialog Box.

Insert a Drawing Object Multiple Times in Office:

To view the Drawing Tool Bar, right-click any tool bar and select Drawing.
To insert a Drawing Object several times double-click the Drawing Object Button (such as Rectangle) on the Drawing Tool Bar. The button stays selected or "Sticky."
Insert your Drawing Object several times by clicking in the appropriate locations.
When you're finished inserting the objects, click the Drawing Object Button again, or press ESC.
You can also turn any of the Drawing Objects available from the Auto Shapes Button on the Drawing Tool Bar into "Sticky" Drawing Object Buttons. Simply click the Auto Shapes Button, point to a category (such as Flowchart), and a submenu of shapes opens up. Drag the move handle at the top of the submenu to create a Floating Tool Bar. Then double-click the Drawing Object Button (such as Flowchart: Process). The button now stays "Sticky."

Make a copy that excludes hidden cells in Excel:

When you use outlining or subtotals to create a small summary of a large set of data, you can make a copy of just the displayed cells in the summary, excluding the detail.
First display only the summary rows or columns, and then select all of the Summary Data.
On the Edit Menu, click
Go To, click Special, and then click Visible Cells Only.
Now click the Copy Button, click a cell on a Blank Worksheet, and click the Paste Button.
The copy includes only the Summary Data.
For more information about subtotals and outlines, type inserting subtotals and creating outlines in the Office Assistant or on the Answer Wizard tab in the Excel Help Window.

Selected items:

Sets the color of the highlighting Excel uses to indicate which cells are selected. This highlighting is a muted version of the color you specify.

Sets the Default Background Color for Worksheet Comments:

The font color sets the default color for comment text. You can also change the background and font colors for individual comments.
For more information about changing comment colors, type format comments in the Office Assistant or on the Answer Wizard Tab in the Excel Help Window, click Search, and then click the topic "Change the appearance of a comment."

Set High-Contrast Section in Excel:

When you select cells, do you have trouble seeing what's selected? If you need a Higher-Contrast Selection display to accommodate low vision, you can set Excel 97-style Selection Shading.
Use the Registry Editor to add a registry subkey HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0ExcelOptionsOptions6 as a DWORD value, and set this subkey equal to 16 decimal.

Switch rows of cells to columns or columns to rows in Excel:

Follow these steps to transpose a row of data into a column or data, or vice versa
Select the cells that you want to switch.
Click Copy on the Edit menu.
Select the upper-left cell of the paste area. The paste area must be outside the copy area.
On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
Select the Transpose check box.
Data from the top row of the copy area appears in the left column of the paste area, and data from the left column appears in the top row.

Type a Line Break:

Press ALT+ENTER to start a new line while you're typing or editing data.

Wrap text automatically:

Click the cell, click Cells on the Format Menu, click the Alignment Tab, and then select the Wrap Text Check Box. Data in the cell will then wrap to fit the column width. You can make the column wider or narrower to adjust the width of the data.

Tips and Tricks for Forms and Reports:
Add the Database Name to a Report:

You might find it useful to display the name of the Database on the Report so you can better track the source of the Report and its data.
Open the Database.
In the Database Window, right-click the Report, and then click Design View.
Click the Text Box Tool in the toolbox, and then click to the left of the Date Field in the Report Header.
In the Label for the Unbound Text Box you just added, type Database
Right-click the Text Box, and then click Properties.
Click the Data Tab, and then type the following text in the Control Source Property Box
=Left(CurrentProject.Name,Len(CurrentProject.Name)-4)
On the View Menu, click Print Preview to see the results.

Discard Form and Report Design Changes made during this session:

If you open a saved Form or Report in Microsoft Access 2000, make some design changes, and then decide that you don't want to keep those changes, you can revert to the last saved version of the Form or Report without closing it.
In previous versions of Access, you had to close the Form or Report without saving changes and then reopen it in order to discard design changes.
To revert to the last saved version, click Revert on the File Menu. The Revert Command is not available unless you have opened a Form or Report in Design View and have made changes to it.
CAUTION
- Once you have reverted to the last saved version of the Form or Report, you cannot recover the changes that you have made to the Form or Report since you last opened it. If you are not sure whether you want to discard your changes, save the Form or Report with a different name instead of using the Revert Command.

Add a Horizontal Line to a Report:

Open the Report in Design View.
Click the Line Tool in the toolbox.
Draw a Horizontal Line from left to right in the section in which you want display a line.
Note
- If you add a line at the top or bottom of the Detail Section, you will see a line either before or after every Detail Record.

Move a Form or Report Control to another Section:

Open the Form or Report in Design View.
Click the Control.
Place the pointer over the Control until it changes to an open hand. You can't drag the Control to another section while the pointer is an upward-pointing hand.
Drag the Control to the other section.
- If there is a Label attached to the Control, that Label moves with the Control to the other section.
Note
- When the mouse pointer is an upward-pointing hand, you can move a Control and its Label separately, but only within the current section of the Form or Report.

Showing a Database 0bject Details:

In Microsoft Access, there are many details associated with each Database Object. These details include the Object's Name, a description of the object, the date and time the object was last modified, the date and time the object was created, and the type of object (Table, Query, Form, Report, Data Access Page, Macro, or Module).
To show the details for your Database Objects in the Database Window, click Details on the View Menu.

Select the text or graphic where you want to apply the new format.

Add a Vertical Line between Columns in a Detail Section:

Open the Report in Design View.
Click the Line Tool in the toolbox.
Draw a line between the first and second Controls in the Detail Section. The height of the line must be the same as the height of the Detail Section.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each pair of Controls in the Detail Section.
On the View Menu, click Print Preview.
If you see discontinued lines when you preview your Report increase the length of each Vertical Line in Design View until you see a single line.

Zoom Box:

Sometimes a Field on a Datasheet, a Text Box on a Form, or a Property Box in a Property Sheet is too small to display all the text it contains. Use the Zoom Box to read or edit this text more easily.
To display the Zoom Box, click the Field, Text Box, or Property Box, and then press SHIFT+F2.

Tips and Tricks for Outlook:
Fixing Corrupted Exchange Files:

To replace corrupted files in MS-Exchange run c:\program files\microsoft exchange\mlset32.exe
Normally, just removing exchange won't delete the old files.
If it should happen that one is corrupted it won't be replaced by the original from the CD when exchange is added again.
Running the program above launches the original exchange setup applet which guides you through the original install process.

Copy Formats to Multiple Targets in Word:

The Format Painter Button on the Standard Toolbar is a quick and easy way to copy character or paragraph formatting from one place to another in a Microsoft Word 97/2000 document:
If you select a paragraph before clicking the Format Painter Button, it copies all the paragraph formatting (including font formatting).
If you select only characters, it copies only the character formatting. When you double-click the Format Painter Button, you can apply the same formatting repeatedly throughout your document until you click the Format Painter Button again to turn it off.

Create an Envelope Template:

File-->Page setup-->Paper size tab-->Landscape Com 10
Margins tab (typical setup)
- Top: 2.5
- Bottom: .5
- Left: 4
- Right: .5
If return address, place in "Header" of envelope and change top margin accordingly.
Save as template.

Insert a Drawing Object Multiple Times in Office:

To view the Drawing Toolbar, right-click any toolbar and select Drawing.
To insert a Drawing Object several times double-click the drawing object button (such as Rectangle) on the Drawing Toolbar. The button stays selected or "Sticky."
Insert your Drawing Object several times by clicking in the appropriate locations.
When you're finished inserting the objects click the Drawing Object Button again, or press ESC.
You can also turn any of the Drawing Objects available from the Auto Shapes Button on the Drawing Toolbar into "Sticky" Drawing Object Buttons. Simply click the Auto Shapes Button, point to a category (such as Flowchart), and a submenu of shapes opens up. Drag the move handle at the top of the submenu to create a Floating Toolbar. Then double-click the Drawing Object Button (such as Flowchart: Process). The button now stays "Sticky."

Speed up Scrolling by Hiding Graphics in Word:

On the Tools Menu, click Options, and then click the View Tab.
To hide Clip Art or Imported Graphics, select the Picture Placeholders Check Box under Show. Word displays only an outline of the graphic.
To hide graphics created with the drawing tools if you are in Print Layout or Web Layout View, clear the Drawings Check Box under Print and Web Layout options. Word does not display the graphic or an outline. (In Normal or Outline View, graphics created with the drawing tools are not displayed.)
Note
- Word will apply these settings to all your documents. If you'd like to display graphics in a different document, you must restore the default settings.

Tips and Tricks for "Works":
Change the default "Save Folder" for "Works":

To change the default directory in Windows 95, update the Start Menu Programs properties from the Taskbar properties. Define the path in the 'Start in' field, and click 'OK'.
- Click 'Start' on the Windows taskbar.
- Select 'Settings' and select 'Taskbar...'
- Click the 'Start Menu Programs' tab.
- Click 'Advanced...' in the 'Customize Start Menu' group.
- In the left-hand pane, double-click to open the 'Programs' folder.
- Select the folder containing the 'Microsoft Works' file icon.
- In the right-hand pane, right-click the 'Microsoft Works' file icon.

Replace a damaged or missing CD-ROM from MS:

Symptoms
When you open one of the Microsoft Office programs listed at the beginning of this article, the program may open slowly.
Cause This behavior may occur if Norton anti-virus 2000, Norton anti-virus 2001, or Norton anti-virus 2002 is installed on your computer.
Resolution
To resolve this problem, unregistered the Norton anti-virus Officeav.dll add-in by following these steps:
- Click Start and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following command (including the quotation marks), and then click OK : regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton anti-virus\officeav.dll"
- If the command is successful, you see the following message:
  - DllUnregisterServer in C:\Program Files\Norton anti-virus\Officeav.dll succeeded.
NOTE:
- If the command is unsuccessful, search your computer's hard disk for the Officeav.dll file. The file may be located in a different folder.

Run detect and repair
- Open one of the Office suites programs
- Click on help
- Click on detect and repair

- Run uninstall program
- Then run the Microsoft Eraser program for your Office suite

Steps to take to trouble shoot Office:

Clean up your hard drive:

Keeping your hard drive clean is of the utmost importance, particularly when attempting to troubleshoot other problems.

Rename normal.dot.
With Word closed. Find and rename the normal.dot file on your system. If there is more than one, rename them all.
If you cannot find normal.dot, or if you are on a network, you can find where your normal.dot is stored by checking under "User Templates" in the Tools-Options menu of Word, on the File Locations tab. If you do not have "permission" to rename normal.dot, check with your network administrator or internal helpdesk (applies only on PCs at work, not home users).
After you have renamed normal.dot, launch Word. If the problem is not resolved, move to "Dump the Registry".
Normal.dot is the default or global template that Word uses to create a blank document. Normal.dot is always in use when Word is open, even if you are using another template. It is very common for normal.dot files to become corrupt. They also store macro viruses.
If Word cannot locate a normal.dot file, it creates a brand new one. When you first install Word, normal.dot is not installed with it.
Uninstalling does not delete normal.dot. These facts explain why reinstalling Office or Word does not fix a problem with a corrupt or virus-infected normal.dot file. Your newly installed program finds normal.dot right where it was before.
You may have settings in your normal.dot that you would like to keep. That is why, instead of deleting normal.dot, it is recommended that you rename it to abnormal.dot or normal1.dot. Then, you can use the Organizer to copy such things as macros and toolbars from the old template to the new one.

Check the Startup Folder:

With Word closed, use Windows Explorer to find the Word Startup Folder, usually C:\program files\Microsoft Office\Word\Startup.
- Make sure there are no files in there that you did not intentionally put in there yourself.
Word has the STARTUP folder and Excel has the XLSTART folder.
Files in either of these folders are automatically opened when you launch the respective program.

Dump the Registry Key:

We are opening the Windows Registry Editor. You may have read that this is dangerous, and that can be true. Normally, we would backup your registry to be safe, but we're going to rename only your Word key. If you follow the instructions exactly, you will not have a problem.
Start-->Run and type: regedit
Hit your Enter key. As you might browse folders in Windows Explorer, browse to the appropriate path
For Word 97:
- hkey_current_usersoftwaremicrosoftoffice8.0word
For Word 2000:
- hkey_current_usersoftwaremicrosoftoffice9.0word
If you are unable to find this folder, or do not understand how to find it, then you should stop here and get support over the phone or in person.
Once you have found the path, right click the Word folder, hit Rename and rename it to oldword. Hit Enter, and then exit the Registry Editor; and then re-launch Word.
If this still has not resolved the problem, move on to "Uninstall, Erase, and Reinstall Office".

- Insert a floppy disk in the floppy disk drive of the computer whose ODBC registry keys you are exporting.
- Click Start

- In the Open box type
- Click OK
- Locate, and then click the following registry keys:

  - On the File menu, click Export
  - In the Save in box of the Export Registry File dialog box, click 3½ Floppy(A:)

Step 2:

Insert the floppy disk that contains the .reg files in the floppy disk drive of the computer that is experiencing the behavior that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

Double-click each .reg file that you created and saved to the floppy disk in the "Step 1: Export the ODBC registry keys" section.
Click Yes when you are prompted to add information to the registry.
Click OK when you receive the message that states that the information is successfully entered in the registry.

Step 3:

Restart the computer.
Insert the Office CD-ROM in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then run Microsoft Office Setup.

Turn Off The Machine Debug Manager

If you run Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later, you can turn off the Machine Debug Manager by turning off script debugging
- Open Internet Explorer
- On the Tools menu click Internet Options
- Click the Advanced tab
- Click to select the Disable script debugging check box
- Click OK
- Close Internet Explorer
- If you run Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), delete the registry value that starts the Machine Debug Manager

Embed:

Places a copy of Excel data in a Word document as an object that you can edit only with Excel's menu commands and toolbar buttons.

Endnote:

Supplemental text added to the end of the document that allows you to identify sources of quotations, facts, and ideas used in the document.

Field Code:

A placeholder for data or a calculation.

Fields:

A list of columns.

Field Names:

A row of column headers that identify the data fields.

First Line Indent:

Moves the first line of a paragraph to the right or the left.

Floating Toolbar:

A toolbar visible in its own window.

Footer:

Text that appears at the bottom of a page, usually a page number.

Formatting Marks:

When you create a document Word automatically inserts some characters that you do not see, including the paragraph mark, tab characters, and spaces between words unless you press the formatting icon on the Standard Toolbar. It is next to the size window.

Formatting Toolbar:

The Formatting Tool Bar is the tool bar directly under the Standard tool bar, listing the heading styles, font type, font size, Bold Icon, Italic Icon, Underline Icon, and so on.

Formulas:

Calculations in Excel or table.

Frame:

A box added to text, graphics, or charts making it easy to reposition these items on a page.

Hanging Indent:

Leaves the first line of the paragraph at the left margin and moves the remaining lines to the right away from the left margin.

Hard return:

A hard return is when you use the Enter Key to go to the next line.

Header:

Text that appears at the top of each page.

Heading Row:

The column heading in the first row of the table.

Horizontal Scroll Bar:

Near the bottom of the document area is used to view various parts of the document by scrolling the document left or right.

Horizontal Text Alignment:

How the text is placed on the page in relation to the left and right margins.

HTML:

Hypertext Markup Language. Use to publish material on the WWW.

Hyperlink:

Text or a picture that is linked to the WWW, E-mail , another file, document or part of the document your working in. When you click on a hyperlink it will take you to that web page, open E-mail , or go to that place in the document.

I Beam:

The shape of the mouse pointer when you position the mouse pointer in the text area.

In Line:

The picture is in the same line as text that appears before or after it.

Insert:

Places data from an Excel file into a Word table that must be edited with Word table features.

Justified Alignment:

Aligns test along both the left and right margins. Word adjusts the spaces between words so that each line is even at both margins.

Justified Vertical Alignment:

Distribute full-page text evenly between the top and bottom margins by adding additional line spacing.

Kerning:

Adjust the space between particular pairs of characters depending on the font.

Landscape Orientation:

The long edge of the page is the top.

Left Aligned Tab:

Aligns text along the left at the tab stop position.

Left Alignment:

Aligns text up along the left margin and the right margin is "ragged," or uneven.

Line Spacing:

The vertical space between lines of text.

Link:

Displays Excel data in the Word document, but stores the data in the Excel workbook. Any changes to the data must be made in the original Excel workbook.

Macro:

A set of commands saved together in one step to automate a multiple step task.

Manual Page Break:

A page break you insert that appears as a dotted horizontal line form the left to the right margins containing the words "Page Break" in the center. Use it start another page manually but it will appear on the same page on the screen. When you print it will print on a separate page.

Menu:

A list of commands.

Menu Bar:

Menu bar is the bar at the top of the window that list, File, Edit, Insert, Table, Window, and Help. Contains the menus for the applications.

Merge:

Combine cells vertically or horizontally.

Merge Field:

Special codes that are placeholders for a specific data item or variable text, such at the customer's name, address, or salutation.

Move Handle:

The gray vertical bar at the left edge of the toolbar.

Move Pointer:

A four-headed black arrow mouse pointer.

Nesting:

The process of creating tables inside other tables.

Newspaper Style Columns:

Two or more columns placed side-by-side.

Note Pane:

A separate text area where you key the note text.

Normal Template:

The basic, default Word document model.

Normal View:

Default view; commonly used for keying, editing, and formatting text. Margins, headers, and footers, drawing objects, graphics, and test in column format are not displayed in Normal View.

Null Screen:

When all documents are closed and the Word application window remains open.

Orphan:

The first line of a paragraph that appears by itself at the bottom of a page. Do not let this happen.

Path:

A path is the path to a file. (Example C:\Windows\My Documents) Word will ask you for a path when you save a file. In the window you would if the My Document folder wouldn't open in the save as window you would go through the above path to tell word where to save the file, also if you wanted to save it somewhere other than My Document.

Personalized Menus:

The short version of the menus.

Personalized Toolbars:

The short version of the toolbars. Ones designed for your personal use.

Pitch:

The space between the labels.

Portrait Orientation:

The narrow edge of the paper is the top of the page.

Presentations:

A collection of slides.

Previous Page/Next Page Button:

Located below the vertical scroll bar. Used to move the insertion point to the top of the previous page or to the top of the next page in a document.

Primary Field:

This is the most important field in a sort.

Print Layout View:

Displays your document more closely to the way it will look on the printed page, including headers, footers, columns, graphics, drawing objects, and margins.

Promote:

To move an indent to the left.

Publishing:

The process of transferring your Web pages to a Web server.

Query:

The process of selecting certain records to merge with a main document by setting criteria for fields and field content in the record.

Range:

A group of cells.

Redo:

The redo button let you redo a previous action you did. The icon is on the standard toolbar and looks like a clockwise arrow.

Repagination:

Changing the reposition of the page breads in a document.

Right Alignment:

Lines up text along the right margin and leaves the left margin ragged.

Right Align Tab:

Aligns text along the right at the tab stop position.

Row:

Set of information that runs across the page.

Secondary Field:

Is the second most important field in a sort.

Section Bar:

The section bar is the space between the left ruler and the left margin.

Section Breaks:

Divides a document into differently formatted parts.

Select:

To select text you basically are highlighting it so that the program knows what text you want to work with. Word uses the word select instead of highlight because word used the word highlight as text you manually highlight and want to show up as highlighted text in your document.

Select Browse Object Button:

Located below vertical scroll bar and used to choose the specific item (such as text, graphics, and tables) you want to use to move or browse through a document.

Shortcut Menu:

A shortcut menu is when you right click with the cursor in text and a menu appears where you are working.

Sizing Handles:

Small white squares that you drag with the mouse pointer to change the size and shape of a drawing object.

Small Caps:

Displays selected text in uppercase characters and any characters keyed with the SHIFT Key pressed are slightly taller than the remaining characters.

Source:

The originating application or file.

Split:

Divide cells vertically or horizontally.

Standard Toolbar:

The standard toolbar is the bar directly below the Menu Bar. It has icons of New Blank Document, Open, Print, Print Preview, Spell check and so on.

Status Bar:

Appears at the bottom of the screen above the taskbar and provides information about your document and a task in progress.

Style:

A group of formats you apply to selected text with a unique name.

Subscript:

Places text slightly below a line of normal printed text.

Superscript:

Places text slightly above a line of normal printed text.

Table:

A grid organized into columns and rows.

Tab Leaders:

Dashes or dots you can add to a tab to provide a visual guide for the reader as they read the text from column to column.

Tags:

HTML codes that identify the parts of a Web page; such as the title, headings, body or graphic images, such as bullets.

Template:

A model document.

Tertiary Field:

Is the third field in a sort.

Text Box:

An invisible container for the text, tables, or charts you want to position in a document.

Text wrapping:

Text wrapping is when you type a line and it automatically goes to the next line.

Theme:

Coordinated background, horizontal divider line, bullet, and text colors.

Thesaurus:

Enables you to replace a selected word with another word that has the same or a very similar meaning.

Threaded:

Replies to an item appear directly under the original item.

Title Bar:

Appears at the top of the window. It includes the application Control-menu icon, the application name. The filename of the active document, Minimize, Restore (Maximize) and Close buttons.

Toolbar:

Contains a set of icons (the same icons you see on the menus) called buttons that you click with the mouse pointer to quickly execute an action.

Top Vertical Alignment:

Aligns text with the top margin.

Undo:

To undo what you just did. The Undo icon on the Standard toolbar looks like a counter-clockwise arrow.

Vertical Alignment:

How text is placed on the page in relation to the top and bottom margins.

Vertical Scroll Bar:

On the right side of the document area is used to view various parts of the document by moving or scrolling the document up or down.

View Buttons:

Located at the bottom left corner of the document; use to change to different views.

Watermark:

A picture or graphic image that appears faintly behind text in a document.

Widow:

A widow is a remaining line from the previous page continued onto the next page. You should not allow this to happen.

Wildcards:

Special search operators, such as (*) or (?) that enables you to search for text patterns.

Wizard:

A series of dialog boxes you can use to complete a task step-by-step.

Worksheet:

A grid of columns and rows in which you enter labels and data.

Word Wrap:

Automatically move words that do not fit on the current line to the next line.
