If you are planning on upgrading to Vista, there are hardly any drivers available. They are not the same as XP and most likely you will not be able to find drivers for your hardware at this time. Cannot Read Emails In Outlook Express In Html After Installing Windows XP SP 2
• Click Tools
• Click Options
• Click Security tab
• Uncheck the line that starts with
  • "Block images and other … . "
    OR
    
  • "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened…"

Shows Attachments That Are Not There
• It seems Outlook Express has a problem when a message starts with the word "begin" followed by 2 blank spaces.
• This normally is used to indicate the beginning of a real attachment. OE will take a message that starts this way and tries to create an attachment from the rest of your message.
• Thus you can't read the rest of the E-mail and think it is a bogus E-mail . There is no known fix or workaround at this time, other than to avoid using the word "begin" with 2 spaces as the first word of your message.
• If you receive a message with such a bogus attachment, you can read the message by pressing Ctrl+F3 to view the source.

Can't Preview Images
• Download the registry fix to correct this problem.
  • Download here
• Download and save target on desktop
• Double click on the file to install the patch
• You will get a message asking if you want to install the patch, answer yes.

The instruction at "xxxxxx" referenced memory at "xxxxxx". The memory could not be "written"
Error
msimn.exe - Application error

The instruction at "0x77f83187" referenced memory at "0x007f47a0". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Solution
• Before you resolve this problem, it is recommended that you back up your messages and addresses
• Ensure that your .DBX files are not Read Only
  • Click Start
  • Click Find (or Search)
  • Click Files and Folders
  • In the Name field type
    *.dbx
  • Set the search to include local hard drives
  • Click Find Now or Search Now
  • When the results are displayed
  • Click the In Folder column heading to group items by location
    • Note The locations of the files found and then use Windows Explorer to navigate to the directory that contains your current store
  • Right Click the first file in the folder
  • Click Properties, on the General tab
  • Click to uncheck the Read Only check box
  • Click OK
  • Repeat for each remaining file in the folder and test Outlook Express
    • Note: By default, the files are stored in an Identities folder under a path similar to one of the following:
      Drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{114378F3-CC8A-4992-B5B4-CCEA0A42A2B6}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
      -OR-
      Drive:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{114378F3-CC8A-4992-B5B4-CCEA0A42A2B6}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
      • Drive is the letter of the drive
      • The GUID number above, {114378F3-CC8A-4992-B5B4-CCEA0A42A2B6}, is an example only. Your findings will vary
• Regenerating the Identities Registry Key
  • Click the Start button
  • Click Run
  • Type regedit or regedit32 (XP)
  • Click OK
  • Browse through the registry to the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Identities
  • On the Registry menu, Click Export Registry File
  • In the Save In box, click Desktop
  • In the File Name box, type Identities
  • Click Save
  • In Registry Editor, right-click the Identities key
  • Click Delete.
  • Quit Registry Editor
  • Start Outlook Express to test functionality
• You can now restore your mail, addresses, and account settings
More Information
• In the event that multiple Identities exist on your system, use the following steps to determine the GUID number (such as the one displayed above {114378F3-CC8A-4992-B5B4-CCEA0A42A2B6} as an example):
  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Type regedit or regedit32 (XP)
  • Click OK
  • Browse through the registry to the following registry key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Identities
  • Click the "+" (plus sign) next to Identities
  • To determine which GUID belongs to which Identity, Click the GUID on the left side window. In the right side window, look for the data name "User Name" - this is the name of the Outlook Express Identity

OE is Very Slow
• First try to compact the folders.
  • Open OE click on Tools
  • Click on Options
  • Click on the Maintenance tab
  • Click Clean up now
  • Click Compact
• Second do a little cleanup and remove all e-mails in all folders you do not need.
• Third delete the Folders.dbx file
  Note: By deleting this file you will lose the following so back these up first.
  • Lists of newsgroups
  • All synchronization options
  • Message Rules

"The Message Could Not be Deleted"
• Compact the folders.
  • Open OE click on Tools
  • Click on Options
  • Click on the Maintenance tab
  • Click Clean up now
  • Click Compact

Unable to Print Messages in Outlook Express
• Usually caused by different versions of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
• Update Internet Explorer and Outlook Express so they both are the same version.

Unable to Start Outlook Express. Some Components May be Busy or Missing
• Close Outlook Express
• Try renaming the following files one at a time, then try again.
  • wab file
  • gapia32.dll
  • htmledit.dll
  • wabmig.exe
• Lack of hard disk space can cause this problem also.

Unable to Start Outlook Express or Unable Send an E-mail Message and Receive One of the Following Error Messages

Prevent Programs from Sending E-mail Without Your Approval
• Today's viruses search for your address book and find a name in it to use as a "sender" and then sends itself without your knowledge to everyone else in the address book.
• Starting with Outlook Express Microsoft has built into Outlook Express a security measure to block the type of extensions "YOU" want to block.
• You can stop this from happening by setting up Outlook Express to notify you when a programs tries to send an e-mail without you knowing.
  • In Outlook Express, click Tools
  • Click Options
  • Click the Security Tab
  • Put a tic in the "Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me"

Using the Internet Explorer Unsafe File List to Filter E-mail Attachments
• Open Outlook Express
• Click Tools on the menu menu
• Click Options
• Click the Security tab
• Put a tic in the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" check box under Virus Protection
  • This option is enabled by default in Outlook Express Service Pack 1 (SP 1)
• If you enable this option, Outlook Express uses the Internet Explorer 6 unsafe file list and the "Confirm open after download" setting in Folder Options to determine whether a file is safe. Any E-mail attachment with a file type reported as "unsafe" is blocked from being downloaded.
• Note: The Internet Explorer 6 unsafe file list includes any file types that may have script or code associated with them. To add additional file types to be blocked or remove file types that should not be blocked:
  • Click Start
  • Open the Control Panel
  • Double-click Folder Options
  • On the File Types tab, click to select the file type that you want to block or allow, and then click Advanced
  • If the file type you want to add is not listed, perform the following steps:
    • Click New
    • In the Create New Extension dialog box, type the file extension you want to add to the unsafe file list
    • Click OK
    • Click Advanced
  • Click to place a check mark (block) or remove the check mark (allow) from the Confirm open after download check box.
  • Note: You cannot remove the check from Confirm open after download to allow some file types.
    For example: .exe files are in the default unsafe file list in Internet Explorer and cannot be allowed.

How to Determine When Outlook Express Has Blocked an Attachment
• When Outlook Express blocks an attachment, the following alert is displayed in the message alert bar at the top of the E-mail message:
  Outlook Express removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail: file_name1, file_name2, and so on.

Error Message
454 5.7.3 Client Does Not Have Permission To Submit Mail To This Server
Solution
• It can be caused by and admin on an exchange server 'un-checking' the anonymous option for security in the SMTP virtual server.
• If, however, this is intentional so that admin could have an authenticated only relay port (not 25, say the proposed standard of 587) for his users on the road (so they wouldn't get nasty messages from certain ISPs who are now blocking outbound port 25 traffic).
• Here is the fix for that SMTP virtual server on that exchange server.
• In the access tab (of the smtp virtual server in question), Auth button, users button, you have to have both Authenticated Users and SELF with Submit and Relay permissions.
• Set that, restart the SMTP virtual server and it (auth relay) will work.

• With Outlook Express, the following information may be displayed on the Error tab in the Details box:
  The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's E-mail address. The sender's E-mail address was '<[e-mailaddress>'. Subject '<subject name>', Account: '<account name>', Server: '<server name>', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '454 5.7.3 Client was not authenticated.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 454, Error Number: 0x800CCC78
  • The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's E-mail address. The sender's E-mail address was ' '. Subject '<subject>', Account: '<account name>', Server: ' <server name>', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '505 Authentication required', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 505, Error Number: 0x800CCC78
  • There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your User Name was rejected. Account: ' ', Server: '<server name>', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Clear text passwords have been disabled for this protocol', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91
Cause
• The Exchange Server computer has been set to only allow Integrated Windows Authentication
Solution
• If you cannot receive messages properly in Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 Internet Mail Only:
  • Start Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express, and click Accounts on the Tools menu. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click the Mail tab Click your mail account
  • Click Properties Click the Servers tab
  • Click to select the Log on using Secure Password Authentication check box under Incoming Mail Server.
• If you cannot send messages properly in Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 Internet Mail Only:
  • Start Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express, and then click Accounts on the Tools menu. In the Internet Accounts dialog box
  • Click the Mail tab Click your mail account
  • Click Properties Click the Servers tab
  • Click to select the My server requires Authentication check box under Outgoing Mail Server.

Outlook Express and Outlook Repeatedly Prompt You for Your Password
• When you use Outlook or Outlook Express and you attempt to check for messages on an Exchange Server-based computer, you may be repeatedly prompted for your user name and password.
Cause
• Your Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) or Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4) account name does not include the following information:
  • NTDomain\NTDomainID\ExchangeMailAlias
Solution
• When you use the default Exchange Server POP3 or IMAP4 authentication setting (Clear Text Authentication), set your POP3 or IMAP4 account name to include the following information:
  • NTDomain\NTDomainID\ExchangeMailAlias
  • For example, if your domain is "Name_of_domain," your account name is "Myaccount," and your Exchange Server alias is "Serveralias," your account name is:
    name_of_domain\myaccount\serveralias
• To find your account name in Outlook Express:
  • On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  • Click the Mail tab, and then click your mail account.
  • Click Properties, and then click the Servers tab.

• On the Exchange Server-based computer, the following information is registered in the Application log:
  • Event ID: 13003
  • Source: MSExchange Pop3
  • Type: Error
  • Category: Authentication
  • Description: Logon attempt from 0.0.0.0 to alias failed: HrLookupCredentials() call failed with error Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
• The dialog box that appears when you try to retrieve messages displays the following message on the Errors tab, under Details:
  There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'alias on Server', Server: 'server', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.', Port 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
• If we look on the Exchange server you may receive the following Event ID from IMAP4:
  • Event ID: 13005
  • Source: MSExchange IMAP4,
  • Type: Authentication
  • Description: logon attempt by Domain\User from IP Address of Exchange Server has failed: EcCreateothersess() call failed with: You do not have permission to log on.

Outlook Express Does Not Prompt You for an Identity
Problem
• If you use the Ask Me option to configure multiple identities in Outlook Express, you may not be prompted for an identity when you start Outlook Express.
• Note: In Outlook Express 5.01 and later, the Ask Me option has been changed to Use this identity when starting a program. Solution
  • To resolve this issue, log off as the identity, or restart the computer.
  • To log off as the current identity in Outlook Express:
    • On the File menu, click Exit and Log Off Identity.
    • If the Exit and Log Off Identity command is not available, point to Identities, click Logoff for the identity from which you want to log off.
    • Restart Outlook Express.

Unable to Print a New Message Before You Send It
Solution
• To work around this issue, use any of the following methods:
  Save the Document
  • To save the document, and then print it, follow these steps:
    • In Outlook Express, click Save on the File menu.
    • Click the Drafts folder
    • Click the message that you want to print.
    • Click File
    • Click Print
  Send the Message
  • To send, and then print the message, follow these steps:
    • Click Send
    • Click the Sent Items folder
    • Click the message that you want to print.
    • Click File
    • Click Print

Script Error When You Send Web Page by E-mail 
Error Message
• You may receive a script error message similar to the following when you attempt to send a Web page by E-mail :
  Internet Explorer Script Error
  An error has occurred in the script on this page.
  Line: 0
  Char: 0
  Error: Access is denied to http://Web Server/filename.htc
  Code: 0
  URL: outbind://117 (Outlook) or mhtml:mid://00000000/ (Outlook Express)
• This happens because the Web Page you are sending has a Script Error and is not the fault of your windows operating system
Solution
• Establish a connection to the Internet, and then start Internet Explorer
• Navigate to the Web page that you want to send as E-mail 
• On the File menu
• Point to Send
• Click Link by E-mail 

Outlook Express Password Is Not Retained In Windows 2000 Or XP
Error
• When you run Outlook Express using Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP and connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to retrieve e-mail messages from a Post Office Protocol (POP) server, your password is not retained even though you have chosen to save it
Solution
• To save your password you must back up your registry, remove the user account information, and then reenter your password
  • Only people who are members of the Administrators group on the local computer can make these changes. Windows XP Home Edition users need to check the Users control panel
  • If they are not listed as an Administrator, someone with Administrator rights will have to add them to the Administrators group
• Quit all programs
• Open Registry
  • Use the instructions below that apply to your operating system
    • Windows 2000
      • Click Start
      • Click Run
      • Type in the Open box
        regedt32
      • Click OK
      • Locate and click the following registry key
        HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider
      • Windows XP
        • Click Start
        • Click Run
        • Type in the Open box
          regedt32
        • Click OK
        • Locate and click the following registry key
          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider
• How to Remove the User Account Information
  • Windows 2000
    • On the Security menu, click Permissions
    • Click the registry key for the user that is currently logged on
      Ensure that Read and Full Control are both set to Allow
    • Click the Advanced button
      Ensure that user that is currently logged on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column
    • Click to select the Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions check box
    • Click Apply
    • Click Yes when you are prompted to continue
    • Click OK
    • Click OK again
    • Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the key
    • Click the user subkey folder that is directly below the Protected Storage System Provider key
    • Click Delete on the Edit menu
    • Click Yes in the warning message dialog box.
    • The user subkey folder looks similar to the following example:
      S-1-5-21-124525095-708259637-1543119021-16701
    • Note: For every identity that you have, there will be a subkey under the Protected Storage System Provider key
    • To resolve this problem in all of your identities, you must delete all of the user subkeys folders under the Protected Storage System Provider key
    • On the Registry menu, click Exit, and then restart your computer
  • Windows XP
    • On the Edit menu, click Permissions
    • Click the registry key for the user that is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control permissions are both set to Allow
    • Click the Advanced button
      Ensure that the user that is currently logged on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column
    • Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box
    • Click Apply
    • Click Yes when you receive a prompt to continue

    • Double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the key
    • Click the user subkey folder that is directly below the Protected Storage System Provider key
    • Click Delete on the Edit menu

    • Note: For every identity that you have, there may be a subkey under the Protected Storage System Provider key. To resolve this issue in all of your identities, you must delete all of the user subkeys folders under the Protected Storage System Provider key
    • On the Registry menu, click Exit, and then restart your computer
• How to Reenter Your Password
  • Note: These steps work for both Windows 2000 and Windows XP
    • Start Outlook Express
    • Note: If you receive a logon error, close the dialog box and proceed.
    • Click Tools
    • Click Accounts
    • Click the Mail tab in the Internet Accounts window
    • In the Account column, click to highlight the Internet E-mail account to be changed
    • Click Properties
    • On the Server tab
    • Type your password in the Password box
    • Click to select Remember password dialog box
    • Click OK
    • Click Close
    • Close Outlook Express and then restart it
    • On the Tools menu, click Send and Receive to test if your password is retained
