"Error 1304: Error Writing to the File" When You Install Office XP-03 or Office 2000

Errors

When you install Office XP or Office 2000, you may receive one of the following error messages:
- Error 1304. Error writing to the file File name and location. Verify that you have access to that directory.
- Error 1305. Error Reading from File: File name and Location. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.
Note: The only item that varies in these error messages is the file name. This error message can list any of several file names

Solution

Clean the hard drive of temp files, this could cause the problem but the CD-ROM is most likely the problem. I just suggest this now because if the following doesn't work then clean up the hard drive.
To test your CD-ROM drive configuration, reduce the drive caching for your CD-ROM drive.

Error 1311 - Source file not found: D:\OFFICE1.CAB ...

Error Message

When you try to install Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office XP, you may receive the following error message:
Solution
- There could be a couple of solutions to this error.
- Try the one below and if that does not work try the solutions below for the Error 1335
- Go to Start
- Run
- Type in
- Locate the following key
- In the right pane locate the following
- Double click on it and change the value to "0"

Error 1335 - Error 1335-Cannot copy cab file Office1.cab

Error Message

When you try to install Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office XP, you may receive the following error message:
When you start the computer in Safe Mode and then try to install Office, you may receive the following error message:
You may receive this error message even when the Office CD-ROM package works correctly on another computer.
When you try to install Office while you are logged on to the computer with administrative rights, you receive the same error messages.

Solution

Method 1: Clean the CD-ROM
- Use a soft cloth to gently clean the disc.
Method 2: Change the memory settings for installation
1. Click Start
2. Click Run In the Open box type
3. Click OK
4. On the BOOT.INI tab, click Advanced Options
5. In the BOOT.INI Advanced Options dialog box, select the /MAXMEM= check box
6. Change the setting to 256 (or lower if your computer has less RAM).
7. Click OK to close the BOOT.INI Advanced Options dialog box.
8. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Apply
9. Click OK to close the System Configuration Utility dialog box.
10. Click Restart to the following message:
  - You must restart your computer for some of the changes made by System Configuration to take effect.
11. After you restart your computer, install Office as a Complete Install
12. After you install Microsoft Office, follow steps 1 through 8 to clear the /MAXMEM= check box
Method 3: Install Office by using a flat folder
- Clean boot your computer.
- Right-click Start
- Click Explore
  - Create a new folder at the root of a hard disk volume, and then name it "Flatfile" (for example, C:\Flatfile)
  - Locate the drive that contains the Microsoft Office CD-ROM, and then copy all the contents of the Microsoft Office CD-ROM into the C:\Flatfile folder.
    - In Windows Explorer, click the CD-ROM icon (or DVD-ROM icon) that contains the Microsoft Office CD-ROM.
    - On the Edit menu, click Select All
    - Paste all the files into the new folder. To do this, drag the selected items on the right side of the Explorer window into the C:\Flatfile folder on the left.
    - Note: If you receive the "This Folder contains "X" hidden files" error message, follow these steps:
      - On the Tools menu, click Folder Options
      - Click the View tab.
      - Turn on Show Hidden Files and Folders
      - Turn off Hide Protected Operating System Files
      - Click Apply
      - Click OK
    - Note: If there are errors during the copy process, this can indicate problems with the CD-ROM (media), a dirty CD-ROM drive, or a problem with your hard disk.
  - Restart your computer the way that you typically do, and then install Microsoft Office from the C:\Flatfile folder onto your hard disk
Method 4: Install only one Office program
- Install only one Office program, such as Microsoft Access. To do this, select a Custom install, and then cancel the selection for all but one of the Office programs. If the Setup program is completed successfully, restart the Setup program. Restarting the Setup program will take you into Maintenance mode. Click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the programs that you did not install in the first installation of Office.
Method 5: Contact Microsoft
- If the previous methods do not resolve the problem, contact Microsoft.

Office Setup Does Not Complete Because BackWeb Agent Is Running

Error

This issue may occur if you have the BackWeb Engine installed on your computer. This program may be configured to start automatically. It runs in the background and may interfere with the installation of the programs that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Solution

To resolve this issue, prevent the BackWeb agent from starting by using the System Configuration Utility, and then install Office.
1. Click Start
2. click Run
3. In the Open box type
  - msconfig
4. Click OK On the General tab, click Selective Startup
5. Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
6. Click OK to close the System Configuration Utility
7. Restart your computer.
8. Install Office (or the office program that you were trying to install).
9. Repeat steps 1 through 3, but click to select the Load Startup Items check box this time.
10. Click OK to close the System Configuration Utility, and then restart your computer

Error 2355. Setup Cannot Access a File Cabinet

Error

When you try to install Microsoft Office XP, you receive the following error message:
If you click Retry, you receive the following error message:
This happens even when you clean boot the computer.

Solution

There are multiple workarounds that may correct this problem
The following lists the various workarounds that you can use
For maximum effectiveness, attempt these workarounds in the order in which they are listed:
- Install the Version of the Windows Installer on the Office XP CD-ROM
- Clean the Office XP CD-ROM
- Log on as "Administrator" (Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 Only)
- Check for Alternate Installation Locations
- Slow Down the CD-ROM Drive (Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition [Me] only)
- Make a "Flat" Copy of the CD-ROM Contents.
- Turn Off and/or Remove Anti-Virus Software
- Contact Microsoft Product Support Services
Install the Version of the Windows Installer on the Office XP CD-ROM
- This error message can be caused by a problem with the Windows Installer software and some CD-ROM drives. Installing an updated version of the Windows Installer may resolve this problem. When you perform step 6, make sure that you select the step that is appropriate for your computer's operating system.
- Note: This workaround works only if the language of Windows matches the language of Office that you are installing. Therefore, the files available on the CD-ROM for the English version of Office XP do not update a non-English version of Windows. To obtain the version of the installer for your version of Windows, search for the appropriate file on the Microsoft Download Center.
- To install the updated version of the Windows Installer, follow these steps:
  - Insert the Microsoft Office XP CD1 into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.
  - Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  - In the My Computer window, right-click your CD-ROM drive
  - Click Open
  - Double-click the Files folder
  - In the Files folder, double-click the Support folder
  - Follow the step that is appropriate for your operating system
  - After the installation of the Windows Installer update is complete, you must restart your computer
  - Then start Setup again to complete the installation of Microsoft Office XP
- Note: If you are using Windows 2000 and do not find the Windows 2000 update on your Office CD-ROM, you can install the Windows 2000 SP2 Update.
- This update includes an updated Windows Installer. For more information about this update, browse to the following Microsoft Web site:
- Note: For Windows 2000, this update requires that the language of Windows match the language of Office that you are installing.
- Therefore, the files available on the CD-ROM for the English version of Office XP do not update a non-English version of Windows 2000.
- To obtain the update, download and install the Windows 2000 SP2 Update from the Windows Update Web site
Clean the Office XP CD-ROM
- Inspect the silver side of the CD-ROM for scratches that may prevent the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive from reading it. If there are no scratches, the CD-ROM may need cleaning
- To clean the CD-ROM, gently wipe the silver side of the disc with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth.
- Do not use paper cloth, which can scratch the plastic and leave streaks. When you clean the CD-ROM, wipe from the center of the disc outward; do not use a circular motion
Log on as Administrator (Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 Only)
- If your operating system is Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, log on as the user "Administrator" and attempt to install Office
Check for Alternate Installation Locations
- If your computer contains more than one CD-ROM-compatible drive (for example, another CD-ROM drive, a DVD-ROM drive, or a CD-RW drive), and if you receive the error message in the "Symptoms" section of this article, run Setup by inserting the CD-ROM into the secondary drive. In most cases, the problem does not occur when you run Setup using the secondary drive.
- Or, if your computer is connected to a network, you may be able to share the Microsoft Office XP CD-ROM in another computer's CD-ROM drive. If you are able to share another computer's CD-ROM drive, insert the Microsoft Office XP CD-ROM into that drive, and, from your workstation, connect to the other computer and run Setup.
- For example, if the other computer's name is "server" and its CD-ROM drive is shared as "cdrom", follow these steps to run Setup from your computer:
  - On the Start menu, click Run
  - In the Open box type the following path:
    Click OK
- You should now be able to proceed normally through Setup. If not, please proceed to the next step
Slow Down the CD-ROM Drive (Windows 98 or Windows Me only)
- Note: If your computer is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, you cannot perform this step. Please proceed to the next step
- If you slow down your computer's CD-ROM drive, you may prevent this problem from occurring. To slow down the CD-ROM drive, follow these steps:
  - Right-click My Computer
  - On the shortcut menu click Properties
  - On the Performance tab
  - Click File System
  - On the CD-ROM tab, move the Supplemental cache size slider all the way to the left.
  - In the Optimize access pattern for list, click No read-ahead
  - On the Troubleshooting tab
  - Click to select all of the check boxes except the Disable all 32-bit protected mode disk drivers check box and the Disable System Restore check box (Windows Me only)
  - Click OK
  - Select the Device Manager tab
  - Click the plus sign (+) to the left of CDROM
  - Then select the CD-ROM drive that is listed (if more than one CD-ROM drive is listed, select the CD-ROM drive that you are using to run Setup)
  - Click Properties
  - Click the Settings tab
  - If the DMA check box is already selected, click to clear it
  - Click OK
  - Click Close
  - Then click Yes to restart your computer
- After your computer has restarted, try running Setup again
- If the problem still occurs, cancel Setup and proceed to the next step
Make a "Flat" Copy of the CD-ROM Contents
- You can create a "flat" copy of the contents of a CD-ROM by creating a folder on your computer's hard disk and copying the entire CD-ROM into the folder.
- After you do this, you can then restart your computer in Safe Mode for Windows 2000, or use Selective Startup (use the System Information Utility in Windows 98 and Windows Me).
- Note: When you create and use a "flat" copy of the contents of a CD-ROM, you must have sufficient disk space on your computer's hard disks to complete the installation of Microsoft Office XP.
  - In Windows Explorer, create a folder on your computer's hard disk.
  - If you have multiple hard disks available, use a hard disk where you will not be installing Microsoft Office XP.
  - For example, if you have three hard disks (C:, D:, and E:), and you plan to install Microsoft Office XP on drive C, create the folder on either drive D or E
  - Note: You need up to 630 megabytes (MB) of free space on the hard disk where you create the folder, depending on which CD-ROM you are copying
  - In Windows Explorer, copy the entire contents of your Microsoft Office XP CD-ROM into the folder that you created
  - After you copy all of the files, use the appropriate method for your operating system
    - Windows 2000
      - Restart your computer in Safe Mode (press F8 at Windows 2000 startup)
    - Windows 98 or Windows Me
      - Follow these steps to use the System Configuration Utility:
        
        On the Start menu
        
        Point to Programs
        
        Point to Accessories
        
        Point to System Tools
        
        Click System Information
        
        On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility
        
        On the General tab of the System Configuration Utility dialog box
        
        Click Selective startup
        
        Clear the following check boxes under Selective startup:
        
        Process Config.sys file
        
        Process Autoexec.bat file
        
        Process Winstart.bat file
        
        Process System.ini file
        
        Process Win.ini file
        
        Load startup group items
      - Note: One or more of these check boxes may not be available, depending on which files are on your computer.
        
        If you are running Windows Me, click the Startup folder tab so that it is in front, and then click to select the *StateMgr check box.
        
        Click OK
        
        Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
  - After your computer starts in Safe Mode or Selective Startup mode, run Setup from the folder on your computer's hard disk
  If the problem still occurs, cancel Setup, and proceed to the next step
- Note: After you complete the installation of Microsoft Office XP, you can remove the "flat" copy of the contents of the CD-ROM from your computer's hard disk.
- If you run Microsoft Office XP Setup again, Setup can use your Microsoft Office XP CD-ROM instead of the "flat" copy
Turn Off and/or Remove Anti-Virus Software
- It is possible that running anti-virus software may cause this problem to occur
- If you have anti-virus software installed on your computer, you may need to turn off or even remove it before you can install Microsoft Office XP
- For instructions on how to do this, please consult your anti-virus software documentation, or contact your anti-virus software vendor
- After you turn off or remove your anti-virus software, run Setup
- If the problem still occurs, cancel Setup, and proceed to the next step.
- Note: After you complete this step, you can turn on or reinstall your anti-virus software at your convenience
- Microsoft uses a comprehensive process to ensure that all Microsoft software is free of viruses
- Because Microsoft Office XP is only sold on CD-ROM, it is not possible for a virus to infect Office CD-ROM
Test for a Damaged CD-ROM or Faulty CD-ROM Drive
- Verify that your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive can correctly read the CD-ROM

Office Stops During Setup: Troubleshooting Steps on Windows XP Summary

This article describes how to troubleshoot when you are installing Microsoft Office XP on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP (Home or Professional), and Setup appears to stop responding (hang) without apparent errors.

Make Sure That Setup Actually Stopped Responding
- Setup may appear to stop, but in fact it is continuing slowly. Wait longer (about 20 minutes) before you end Setup.
- Open the Windows Task Manager by right-clicking an empty space on the taskbar, and then clicking Task Manager
- Click the Processes tab, and then examine the CPU for the multiple Msiexec.exe entries
- If any Msiexec.exe process is using a relatively high CPU percentage, this indicates that Setup is not stopped or hung.
- Before you conclude that Setup is stopped, examine the CD-ROM drive light and hard disk light for activity.
- In the Windows Task Manager, verify whether the Office Setup program appears as "Not Responding" in the Status column on the Applications tab of the Windows Task Manager dialog box
Verify That the CD-ROM Is Clean and Unscratched
- If the problem occurs while you are installing from a CD-ROM, verify that the CD you are using is clean
- You can wipe the CD with a soft, lint-free cloth
- Also ensure that there are no large scratches on the CD
- If the CD is damaged and unreadable, error messages may appear during installation
Uninstall a Beta Version of Office XP or if updating I would uninstall the previous version
- If a beta version of Office XP was installed earlier, the beta version must be uninstalled before you install the final version of Office XP
- Although Office XP Setup prompts you to uninstall such a prerelease version, the removal process may not be completed successfully
- To uninstall a beta version of Office XP, follow these steps:
  - In Control Panel
  - Click Add or Remove Programs
  - In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, select the Office XP entry (for example, select Microsoft Office XP Professional)
  - Click Remove
  - Follow the directions provided in the dialog boxes
- After the beta version is uninstalled, run the Setup program for Office XP
- Verify the Permissions
Make sure that the correct permissions are set for your account
- To determine whether you have the correct permissions to install, run, and use the Office program that you are having problems with, log on to the computer as an administrator
- When you log on to Windows as an administrator, you have full read/write permission to all folders and files on the computer, as well as to the registry
- If the problem does not occur after you log on as an administrator, verify the permissions of your user account
- Note:
  - The Local Administrator account is not the same as a user account that has administrator permissions
  - The Local Administrator account is the system account that is used to set up the operating system
- Test the User Profile
  - Sometimes, a user's specific information may be damaged, but other users on the same computer may have no problem
  - To determine whether this is the case, sign on as a new user or create a new user, and then test

Use the Setup Log Files

When you install Office XP, Setup automatically creates log files in your TEMP folder

The log files have names similar to the following:

Log file for	Log file name
-------------------------	---------------------------------------------------------
Setup.exe	Office XP Setup(####).txt
Windows Installer	Office XP Setup(####)_Task(0001).txt

In the preceding table,
is the edition of Office XP that you are installing.
- For example, these files may be:
  - Office XP Professional Setup(0001).txt
  - Office XP Professional Setup(0001)_Task(0001).txt
- The #### characters in the log file names are numbers beginning with 0001
- These numbers increment by 1 each time that you run Setup
- Therefore, the log file with the highest number is the most recent log file
Verbose logging is enabled by default in Office XP; therefore, the Windows Installer log files contain much information about events that occur during installation
This file may be requested if you contact Microsoft Technical Support for further troubleshooting

Close Unnecessary Memory-Resident Programs
- Programs that run in the background in memory are called terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) programs
- For example, these programs may be virus protection software, utility programs, print manager programs, or screen savers.
- To determine whether a terminate-and-stay-resident program is running, follow these steps:
  1. To display the Windows Task Manager, right-click an empty space on the taskbar, and then click Task Manager
  2. On the Applications tab, close any unknown or unnecessary programs by clicking the program to select it, and then clicking End Task
  3. Repeat step 2 until you close all unknown or unnecessary programs
- Some TSRs may be loaded into memory but may not appear on the Task list on the Applications tab. These TSRs are loaded via the Windows registry
- To see what programs are loaded via the registry, follow these steps:
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - In the Open box, type
  - Click OK
  - Select the following key in the registry:
    - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
      - This key lists all programs that are started when Windows is started.
      - Programs that are started automatically can cause problems with Office Setup and should be disabled. In the Windows Task Manager, click End Task for each of the programs that is listed in this registry key
  - Select the following key in the registry:
    - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
      - Entries in this key are run once when the computer is restarted, and then the system deletes them
      - These programs can cause problems in Office Setup and should be disabled. In the Windows Task Manager, click End Task for each of the programs that is listed in this registry key
  - Select the following key in the registry:
  - Select the following key in the registry:
Check the TEMP Folder
- An invalid TEMP environment variable can cause errors with the Office Setup program
- This section describes how to verify that your temporary folders are correctly set up
- First, you must determine the location of your Windows TEMP folder and verify the validity of your TEMP environment variables
- To do this, follow these steps:
  - Click Start
  - Click Control Panel
  - If you are using Classic View, in Control Panel, double-click the System icon
  - If you are using Category View, click Performance and Maintenance
  - Click the System icon
  - When the System Properties dialog box appears, click Environment Variables on the Advanced tab
  - In the Environment Variables dialog box, look under User variables for user name for the columns Variable and Value
  - The TMP and TEMP environmental settings appear under these columns
  - Examples of valid settings are as follows:
    - TEMP = C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
    - TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
  - If a TEMP (or TMP) variable entry is not listed, follow these steps:
    1. Click New
    2. The New User Variable dialog box appears
    3. In the Variable Name box, type TEMP
    4. Press the TAB key to move to the Variable Value box, and then type C:\WINDOWS\TEMP (or any other valid path and folder name)
    5. Click Set or OK to add these values to the User variables for user name box
  - Click OK to close the Environment Variables dialog box
  - Click OK to close the System Properties dialog box
  - Close Control Panel
  - Start Windows Explorer and look for a folder with the same name and location as that listed in the User variables for user name box
  - If you find that the folder indicated by the environment variable does not exist, either open Windows Explorer and create a new TEMP folder in that location, or repeat steps 1-5 above to update the TEMP environment variable to a valid location
  - Note: This step is important, because an invalid TEMP setting can have serious effects on Microsoft Windows and the Office Setup program
  - Verify that the drive that contains the TEMP folder has sufficient free disk space
  - Generally, the amount of available free space on this drive should be at least 50 MB
  - Verify that you have read/write permission to this folder
  - Verify that the TEMP folder is empty.
  - If files exist, you can delete any *.tmp files that are not currently in use
    - These files usually have a modified date that is earlier than the current session of Windows
  - It is recommended that you use the Disk Cleanup Utility to remove these unused temporary files (see the "Disk Cleanup Utility" section later in this article)
  - Note:
    - You should quit all Windows programs before you delete any *.tmp files, because programs that are running create and use temporary files
    - You should periodically remove any leftover temporary files on your system. Disk Cleanup Utility In Windows, you can delete many unused or temporary files with the Disk Cleanup Utility
    - Disk Cleanup searches your computer's hard disk and then shows you temporary files, Internet cache files, and unnecessary program files that you can safely delete
    - You can direct Disk Cleanup to delete some or all of those files
      - To open the utility
        
        Click Start
        
        Point to All Programs
        
        Point to Accessories
        
        Point to System Tools
        
        Click Disk Cleanup
Check the Hard Disk for Disk Errors and Fragmentation
- Use the Disk Defragmenter program to check the hard disk volume for lost clusters and other master file tables (MFT) errors
- You can also test the integrity of the hard disk's ability to read and write data and then repair most errors
- To run the Disk Defragmenter program, follow these steps:
  - Click Start
  - Point to All Programs
  - Point to Accessories
  - Point to System Tools
  - Click Disk Defragmenter
- Click the drive that you want to check for errors Click Analyze
- When this process is completed, click Defragment
Scan the Computer for Viruses
- When you run a virus scan make sure you run it in safe mode so it can clean the infected files if there are any
- A good idea to disable System Restore when running any kind of virus scan or malware scans so the System Restore folder will not have any malware or virus files in it
- Just keep in mind that once System Restore is disabled all files in it are deleted
- Once the scans are finished remember to Enable System Restore
- Note:
  - Do not run antivirus terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) programs while you run the Office Setup program
  - Instead, run these utilities before you run Office Setup, and then disable or turn off the utilities until Setup is completed
Clean Start Windows XP
Run Setup from a Flat File
- If enough space is available on the hard disk, make a copy of the contents of the Office XP CD by following these steps:
  - Create a new folder at the root of a hard disk volume, and then name it "Flatfile"; for example, C:\Flatfile
  - Copy the entire contents of Office CD 1 into the Flatfile folder
  - In Windows Explorer, click the CD-ROM icon or DVD-ROM icon that is being used to install
  - Click Select All on the Edit menu
  - To paste all the files into the new folder, drag the items that you selected on the right side of the Explorer window into the Flatfile folder on the left
  - If there are errors during the copy process, this can indicate problems with the CD (media), a dirty CD-ROM drive, or a problem with your hard disk drive
- You can use this flat file to install Office while in Windows Safe mode (see the "Start Windows in Safe Mode" section later in this article)
- If installing from a flat file fails, it is still possible there is a problem with the CD, because a damaged file can be copied without generating an error message
- Installing from this flat file while in Safe mode is necessary in order to determine whether startup items or services are conflicting with the Setup program
Start Windows in Safe Mode
- To start Windows in Safe mode and make the additional troubleshooting features available, follow these steps for your system configuration:
  - While restarting your computer, press F8 to enter Troubleshooting mode
    - Multiple boot:
      - If your Windows XP-based computer is set up for multiple boot, the boot-up process stops at a menu titled Please Select the Operating System to start
      - At this point, press F8
    - Non-multiple boot:
      - If your Windows XP-based computer is not set up for multiple boot, press F8 when the Starting Windows progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen
    - Note:
      - Be prompt; you may have only a few seconds to press F8
  - Safe mode is selected by default
  - Press Enter, and then you see the words "Safe Mode" appear in the four corners of your screen
  - After Windows XP finishes starting in Safe mode, run the Office Setup program
Check for Software Updates
- Outdated and incompatible software also can cause Setup problems. Check with the manufacturer of your computer for various software updates, such as BIOS updates, OEM Windows updates, and hardware driver updates (CD-ROM, video, and printer drivers)
Reinstall Windows in a New Folder
- Use this step after you try all other troubleshooting methods listed earlier in this article
- For testing purposes, you can install Windows into a different folder from your original Windows installation and then install Office to that environment
- This is called making a "parallel" copy, because your original installation of Windows is not entirely removed
- Instead, Windows is installed alongside your original copy
- If installing Office this way is successful and you decide to keep the new installation of Windows, you must reinstall all Windows-based programs under the new Windows installation
Check Hardware
- If you try all other troubleshooting steps and you still receive error messages, one or more devices in your computer hardware may be incompatible with Windows or may be damaged
- To identify a problem with your computer hardware, contact your computer vendor
