Installing Programs in Safe Mode

If you are planning on upgrading to Vista, there are hardly any drivers available. They are not the same as XP and most likely you will not be able to find drivers for your hardware at this time. Check with your manufacture for Vista drivers before you upgrade or you may be out of luck for a while until someone comes up with drivers. This is another repeat of XP SP 2.

Three things to remember when you are working with computers.

• Second take your time, a little mistake can cause a big problem.
• Third all answers are only a question away.

Installing Programs In Safe Mode.
• The best way to install any program is from Safe Mode. In Safe Mode other programs will not be running and a minimum number of files will be in use. With this you have fewer probabilities of having a problem.
  
  • Step 1: The first thing you have to do is copy the program from the CD to the hard drive. Steps one and two you MUST do without being in Safe Mode.
    • You will need a folder on the desktop to place the program files so create one. Right click on the desktop and click "New" then "Folder".
    • A new folder will be created. You can name it or just leave it like it is for once the program is installed you will be deleting the folder.
  • Step 2: Copy files from CD to hard drive.
    • With the program CD inserted, (it will try to install when you insert it, just cancel the installation.)
    • Go to Start, run and type in the CD drive letter (D:)?? depending on the drive letter and then click Okay.
    • A new window will open showing all that is on the CD Go to "Edit", and click on "Select All".
    • Click on "Edit", "Copy".
    • Close out that window.
    • Open the new folder you created and place the mouse in the window body and right click and then click "Paste".
    • Depending on the size of the program this could take a while to do.
  • Step 3: Start in Safe Mode and install.
    • Reboot in Safe Mode, usually on most computers you can hold the CTRL key down while booting and you will get the menu to start in Safe Mode.
    • Once the computer has started in Safe Mode, open the folder and look for the file named "Setup.exe" or "Install.exe".
    • Double click on that file and the program will install.
    • Follow the instructions the way you normally would when installing a program and you will have no problems.
    • Once the program is installed, reboot, try the program and if all works okay, delete the folder you created on the Desk Top. Run defrag and you will then be set to go.

IE Explorer 6 Will Not Install
• You can change an entry in the registry so that you are able to download IE 6 and install.
• Open the registry and go to this key:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
• Click on Internet Explorer and look in the right pane for this entry:
  • [b]Version[/]
• Double click on that and modify the data to read
  • 5.00.3105.0106
• Download and install IE 6 again.
• After the install, the registry key will have been changed by the install program to read the correct IE version. So you will not have to go in and do anything after.

Removing Tiscali, Tiscali says it can't be done…

• For those of you who are considering them as an ISP remember it is they who are telling you that you will never be able to remove it completely from your computer so think about this before you connect to the internet with them.
• SOLUTION
• Go to control panel, add/remove programs and remove the program.
• Gee wouldn't it be nice if that is all there was to it?
• Next you have to delete ALL profiles or it will come back to haunt you.
• Next after all this when you create a new profile and open IE Explorer you will still see it on the title bar of IE Explorer. GO to the link below to remove it from there. You can put any name there you want once you remove it.
  
• Remove name from IE Explorer title bar.

How to Manually Remove Programs from the Add or Remove Programs Window
Click on Start
• Click on Run
• In the Open box type or copy and paste
  regedt32
• Click OK.
• The Registry Edit Windows will open
• Scroll down to the following registry key:
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
  Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
• In the left pane click the Uninstall registry key
• Click Export on the File menu.
• In the Export Registry File dialog box that appears, click Desktop in the Save in list, type uninstall in the File name box, and then click Save.
• Note:
  • Each key listed under Uninstall in the left pane of Registry Editor represents a program that is displayed in the Currently installed programs list of the Add or Remove Programs tool.
  • To determine which program that each key represents, click the key, and then view the following values in the details pane on the right:
    • DisplayName: The value data for the DisplayName key is the name that is listed in Add or Remove Programs.
    -and-
    UninstallString: The value data for the UninstallString key is the program that is used to uninstall the program.
• After you identify the registry key that represents the program that you removed but which is still displayed in the Currently installed programs list of Add or Remove Programs, right-click the key in the left pane of the Registry Editor window, and then click Delete.
• Click Yes in response to the "Are you sure you want to delete this key and all of its subkeys?" message.
• On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
• To check to make sure you removed the correct entry open Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and see if it is listed.
• If not double click on the saved file and this will put the registry back the way it was before you deleted the information in the registry.
