Error Message Appears When You Try to Start Internet Explorer

When you start Internet Explorer (IE), you may receive the following error message:
If you try to gain access to a Web site by entering the IP address of the site in the address bar, you may receive the following error message:

Solution

To resolve this behavior, import a clean copy of the WinSock2 key into the registry:
- On a Windows 2000-based computer that is able to open IE with no error, save a clean copy of the WinSock2 key:
  - Click Run
  - Type in
  - Click OK
  - Locate the following key in the registry:
  - Insert a floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.
  - Select the key, and then on the Registry menu, click Save.
  - Save the clean copy of the key onto the floppy disk.
  - Quit Registry Editor
- On the Windows 2000-based computer that is experiencing the error, import the clean copy of the key into the registry:
  - Click on Start
  - Click Run
  - Type in
  - Click OK
  - Locate the following registry key:
  - To delete the existing WinSock2 key
  - Click the key
  - Then on the Edit menu, click Delete.
  - Insert the floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.
  - On the Registry menu, click Restore.
  - Specify that you want to restore the clean key that you saved on the floppy disk.
  - Quit Registry Editor.
- Restart your computer.

Error Message When You Try to Browse the Web: The Page Cannot Be Displayed

Error Message

When you attempt to browse the Web, you may receive the following error message:
- The page cannot be displayed.
- The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.
You may also receive an error message similar to the following
- Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site Web site. The application called an interface that was marshaled for a different thread.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove OfferCompanion.
- Click Start
- Point to Settings
- Click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box
- Click OfferCompanion
- Click Add/Remove.
- Restart the computer.

You Cannot Disable an Automatic Configuration Script in Internet Explorer

Error Message

When you try to browse the Internet with Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
Also, if you clear the Use Automatic Configuration Script check box in the Automatic Configuration section of the Local Area Network (LAN) settings dialog box in Internet Explorer properties and then return to the dialog box, the change is not retained and the checkbox is again enabled.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:
Click Start
Click Control Panel and then start the Add or Remove Programs tool.
Remove any unnecessary Internet software.
Test Internet Explorer to determine whether the issue is resolved.
If the issue is not resolved, quit all instances of Internet Explorer.
Click Start
Click Run
Type in
Click OK
The following message indicates that the command was completed successfully:
You can then remove the automatic proxy settings in Internet Explorer and restore your ability to browse.

Cannot Open a Web Page in Internet Explorer and "Page Cannot Be Displayed"

When you attempt to open a Web page by using Internet Explorer, you may receive the following message:

Resolution

To resolve this problem, delete the Index.dat file in Internet Explorer:
- In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options
- On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files click Delete Files
- On the Delete Files dialog box message that is displayed, click OK
- Under History click Clear History
- On the Delete all items in your History folder? dialog box, Click OK
- Quit Internet Explorer.
- Log on to the computer by using the account of a user who does not experience the problem.
- Got to Start
- Click on Programs
- Click on MS-DOS
- In the DOS window change the directory to the following path: drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
- Type del index.dat and then press Enter
- Exit the command prompt and then restart the computer. The Index.dat file is re-created the next time that you log on to the computer

Page Cannot be Displayed" or "Time-out" Error Messages When Browsing the Internet

When you are connected to the Internet and you attempt to reach Web pages, you may experience the following behaviors:
- You may receive "Page Cannot be Displayed" or "Request Timed Out" error messages while browsing in either Internet Explorer or other Web browsers.
- When you try to reach a Web site, the status bar at the bottom of the Internet Explorer window moves to the right (as if the Web page is loading correctly), but then it resets itself and repeats.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, uninstall InternetBOOST '99 and contact Bonzi software support for assistance.
It seems Bonzi Web site is not longer up and I cannot find any links to a site they have at this time..

Error Messages When You Try to Log On to a Security-Enhanced Web Site if Registry Key Is Damaged or Invalid

When you try to use Internet Explorer to log on to a security-enhanced Web site, you may receive one or both of the following error messages:

- Connection with the server was reset.

Solution

To resolve this problem, use Registry Editor to remove the following registry key:

When you try to gain access to a security-enhanced Web site, you may receive the following error message:

- Quit Internet Explorer (if it is running).
- Click Start

- Clear the Use PCT 1.0 selection.

Unable to Connect to Secure Web Page Using Internet Explorer

When you connect to a secure Web page, you may receive the following error message:
- In Internet Explorer 4:

- In Internet Explorer 5:
  The page cannot be displayed. Cannot find server or DNS Error.

Solution

To correct this behavior, use the appropriate method:
- Method 1
  - Click Start
  - Point to Settings
  - Click Control Panel
  - Double-click Internet
  - Click the Advanced tab.
  - Under Security, click one of the following check boxes to select it:
  - Click OK
- Method 2
  - If your system is configured to use a proxy, do the following steps:
  - Note: The procedures that are described in this article may require information about your proxy server that can only be provided by your system administrator or Internet Service provider. Because of this, you may need to contact your system administrator or Internet Service provider before you proceed.
    - In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
    - On the Connections tab
    - Click LAN Settings
    - Under Proxy Server
    - Click Advanced
    - Type the appropriate proxy server address and port in the Secure box
    - Click OK
    - Click OK
    - Click OK again.
  - Note: A proxy server acts as a security barrier between your internal network and the Internet, keeping others on the Internet from being able to obtain access to information that is located on your internal network.

Error Message: Error 501/505: Not Implemented or Not Supported

When you use Internet Explorer on your Windows XP-based computer to try to view a Web page, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Solution

Open Internet Explorer
Click Internet Options on the Tools menu
In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab
Click to clear the HTTP 1.1 check box
Click OK
Test to determine if the issue is resolved
If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next step
Open Internet Explorer
Click Internet Options on the Tools menu
In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab
Click to clear the Show friendly HTTP error messages check box
Try to view a Web page to reproduce the error message and to receive a new, more descriptive error message.
This new error message may be similar to the following:
Note the name of the program in this new error message
The program name that you noted above may be the cause of this issue
Either remove this program, or contact the manufacturer of the program to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue

Internet Explorer Favorites is Missing

This is from McAfee Virus Support
- If you use McAfee Virus Scan Program
- Open VirusScan console
- Select "Pick a task"
- Select "Change my VirusScan settings"
- Select "Configure VShield background scanning"
- Select "Customize your VShield settings"
- Select the "Internet Filter" icon from the icons down the left hand side On the "Detection" tab, in the 'Applet filters' section, remove the tick next to "ActiveX Controls".

Can't Find Favorites in XP

Go to Start
Point to All Programs
Point to Accessories
Click Windows Explorer
When Window Explorer opens click on Tools
Click Folder Options
Click View
Select Show hidden files and folders.
Then go to C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Favorites. Right click/unhide.

Certain Users Can't Find Favorites in XP

Go to Start
Click Run
Type in
Click Okay
The Registry Edit window open, scroll down to the following key.
Look in the right pane for the Favorites value.
Copy the path to the Favorites folder to a word document or write it down, you will need it later..
The value should be REG_SZ value type, not REG_EXPAND_SZ type.
If it's REG_EXPAND_SZ, right click Favorites and select Delete.
Right click in the right pane and select New, String value and name it Favorites.
Double click the new entry and enter the path to the Favorites folder (the path you saved above).

You Receive A "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" Error Message When You Access A Web Site That Is Hosted On A Windows XP SP2-Based Computer

Error

When you host a Web site on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) version 5.1, and you apply Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 to the computer, you may receive the following error message when you access the site:

Cause

This problem occurs because installing Service Pack 2 for Windows XP Professional enables the Windows Firewall. By default, the Windows Firewall blocks most incoming traffic, including the HTTP protocol and the HTTPS protocol. The HTTP protocol and the HTTPS protocol are used to access a Web site.
Note:Windows Firewall replaces Internet Connection Firewall
- Internet Connection Firewall is included with Windows XP
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
- Method 1: Configure Windows Firewall to enable HTTP traffic
  - To configure Windows Firewall to enable HTTP traffic, follow these steps
    - Click Start
    - Click Run
    - Type Firewall.cpl
    - Click OK
    - On the Exceptions tab, click Add Port
    - In the Name box, type HTTP
    - In the Port box, type 80
    - Note: This procedure enables HTTP traffic.
      - If you also require HTTPS traffic for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) sites repeat these steps, but type HTTPS in the Name box, and then type443 in the Port box
- Method 2: Configure network settings
  - To configure network settings, follow these steps:
  - Click Start
  - Click Run
  - Type Firewall.cpl
  - Click OK
  - On the Advanced tab under Network Connection Settings, click your network connection
  - Click Settings
  - On the Services tab, click Web Server (HTTP)
  - Click OK
  - Note: If you must also enable HTTPS traffic for Secure Socket Layer (SSL) sites, click both Secure Web Server (HTTPS) and Web Server (HTTP)

AOL Error: Page Cannot Be Displayed

The AOL 9.0 software comes with a repair program that can repair some common errors.
The Auto Fix will do the following:
- Delete the temporary Internet files (i.e., clear your browser cache)
- Uninstall the AOL adapter
- Repair the AOL Web browser
- Reinstall Dial-up Networking
To run the Web browser Auto Fix
- Ensure that AOL is open and that you are NOT connected to the America Online service.
- On the AOL toolbar, click Help
- Click AOL Help
- Click the Index tab
  - This is the tab with a gold key
- In the box in the upper left, type FIX

How To Determine And Recover From Winsock2 Corruption

- How to determine whether the Winsock2 key is corrupted
  - To determine if the symptoms are caused by a problem with the Winsock2 key, use one of the following methods.
    - Method 1: Use the Netdiag tool
      - To use the Netdiag tool, you must install the Microsoft Windows XP Support Tools. To do so, follow these steps:
      - Note
        
        If you already have Support Tools installed, go to the second procedure in this section.
        
        If you do not have Support Tools installed and you do not have the Windows XP Setup CD, go to Method 2.
        
        Insert your Windows XP Setup CD
        
        Locate the Support\Tools folder
        
        Double-click the Setup.exe file
        
        Follow the steps on the screen until you reach the Select An Installation Type screen
        
        On the Select An Installation Type screen
        
        Click Complete
        
        Click Next
        
        When the installation is complete, follow these steps:
        
        Click Start
        
        Click Run
        
        Type the following in the Run box

        Click OK
        
        Type
        netdiag /test:winsock
        
        Press Enter
        
        The Netdiag tool will return the test results for several network components, including the Winsock.

      - Note Use this method only if you do not have a Windows XP Setup CD and you do not have Support Tools installed.
        
        Click Start
        
        Click Run
        
        Type in the Run box

        Expand Components
        
        Expand Network
        
        Click Protocol
        
        You will have ten sections under Protocol
        
        The section headings will include the following names if the Winsock2 key is undamaged:
        
        MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
        
        MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]
        
        RSVP UDP Service Provider
        
        RSVP TCP Service Provider
        
        MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip
        
        MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip
        
        MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip
        
        MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip
        
        MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip
        
        MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip
        
        If the names are anything different from those in this list, the Winsock2 key is corrupted, or you have a third-party add-on, such as proxy software, installed.
        
        If you have a third-party add-on installed, the name of the add-on will replace the letters "MSAFD" in the list.
        
        If there are more than ten sections in the list, you have third-party additions installed.
        
        If there are fewer than ten sections, there is information missing.
        
        Note These entries represent an installation with only the TCP/IP protocol installed. You can have a working Winsock and see additional entries if another protocol is installed. For example, if you install NWLink IPX/SPX, you will see 7 additional sections, for a total of 17. Below is an example heading of one of the new sections:
        
        MSAFD nwlnkipx [IPX]
        
        Also, each of the new sections that are created by installing NWLink IPX/SPX start with "MSAFD." Therefore, there are still only two sections that do not start with those letters.
        
        If the Netdiag test fails, or if you determined that there is Winsock corruption by looking at Msinfo32, you must repair the Winsock2 key by using the steps in the next section.
- How to Recover from Winsock2 Corruption
  - To resolve this issue, delete the corrupted registry keys, and then reinstall the TCP/IP protocol.
    - Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys
      - Click Start
      - Click Run
      - In the Open box type
        regedit
      - Click OK
      - In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and then click Delete:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
        \Winsock
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
        \Winsock2
      - When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes
      - Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.
    - Step 2: Install TCP/IP
      - Right-click the network connection
      - Click Properties
      - Click Install
      - Click Protocol
      - Click Add
      - Click Have Disk
      - Type
        C:\Windows\inf
      - Click OK
      - On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
      - Click OK
      - Restart the computer
